2023 A year in review
A year in review
Goodbye 2023, welcome 2024!
2023 has come and nearly gone. It seems time really does fly!
In the vineyards of the Cognac region, 2023 was overall very positive in terms of quality and in the abundance of the harvest. Climatic challenges are seemingly the norm year after year, with small pockets of the region impacted by frost, hail, and powdery mildew (oidium). Our very own 1.5 hectares of ugni blanc vines at Beaulieu were severely affected by the latter. As such, what was supposed to be our first harvest resulted in nothing. Oh well, our sights are set on 2024.
For Cognac Expert and the producers we aim to showcase and support, we have had a remarkably positive year. We aimed to reach more people around the world by expanding our language offerings. And as always, we’ve made a particular effort to scour the region looking for small, artisanal, intensely-independent Cognac producers to bring a taste of their small corner of the Cognac region to your glass - wherever you are in the world. These small producers are the very fabric of the region and nothing brings up more pleasure than shining the spotlight on them.
And of course we had our hands full with all sorts of other projects, ranging from our Cognac Expert Originals, to Bonjour Drinks, to cabinet7, to B2B custom bottlings, and so much more. 2023 was yet again a year that saw us double down on our primary goal of showing Cognac’s diversity. And this will continue just as strongly as 2024 kicks off. We are thrilled to keep going and crack open the door into our little Cognac universe.
Happy reading about what 2023 had in store for us. Cheers!

Cognac Expert Originals
Cognac Expert Originals are products that we conceive and then produce, always in direct collaboration with producers in and around the region. 2023 was a busy year in terms of Originals!
The Cognac Calendar returned, as it has become a highly anticipated and staple offering for our beloved customers. No other product lets us explore the diversity of Cognac more than our Cognac Calendar.
We also profoundly launched OUI VIE, in direct collaboration with a young dynamic musician from Germany. For the Cognac, we worked with none other than Jacques Petit from Cognac Andre Petit to create a custom blend of 18 year old wonderfully balanced and rich XO Cognac. Launching OUI VIE has been way too much fun!
Sophie & Max Selection returned with its N°4 release, this time with Bertrand and Sabine de Witasse from Raison Personelle. We also kicked off La Recession, which is aimed at packing as much value into the bottle as possible - old Cognac with no additives, and minimally marketed and presented during these times of relative worldwide economic stress. We have every reason to believe this La Recession line will continue in 2024.
We also did numerous Online Community Tastings featuring new and interesting products, and even created our very first educational-driven Tasting Sets (the first one being all about ABV%). Lastly, during the months of June and November, we were proud to release exclusive editions with some of Cognac’s most iconic houses: Godet Hors d’Age (mini barrel and bottle), Deau Reserve Ancestrale Dame Jeanne, Prunier Extra mini barrel, and the Jean Fillioux Hors d’Age.
Watch this space during 2024.

Another great selection 2023
It was a pleasure to be able to taste such a fine selection of cognacs in this year's Advent Calendar.
Thank you for your wisely chosen sequential arrangement of the beautiful little bottles Cognac Expert!
Best brand ever!
It was a good try, worth it! Definitely going to order one for next year!
OUI VIE
The family-run Cognac house of André Petit is based in Berneuil and is proud to have maintained its traditional harvesting and production methods that have been passed down through generations. Jacques Petit, a master of his trade and grandson of the founder, now runs the house.
He loves to create new Cognacs. And even more, he loves working with young people who are passionate about Cognac. His latest project combines just that: Jacques' experience and know-how with the carefree spirit of Marvin Game - a young musician from Germany.
Together, the two have developed a Cognac that brings together hip hop and the complex notes of a well-aged cognac: OUI VIE.
Sophie & Max Sélection N° 4
In the heart of the Grande Champagne in Angeac-Champagne, the premier cru of Cognac, resides a Cognac house that we think is really like no other. Raison Personelle, which as many might guess means personal reason, evokes a blend of tradition, authenticity, and passion - very normal things for a Cognac house - but all wrapped up in a distinctively Rock and Roll spirit.
Sabine and Bertrand de Witasse, the kind folks behind this unique house, have breathed life into their small-batch Cognacs by merging their two greatest passions: distillation and rock and roll. We’ve always been keen on protecting Cognacs’s diversity, and so the pull to Raison Personnelle for a Sophie & Max Selection edition just felt so right.
Online Community Tastings
Our worldwide community united for our Community Live Tastings, delving into the world of Cognac and French spirits. Together, we shared a passion for discovery and discussion, creating memorable moments in every glass.
Enjoyed the tasting! Enjoy the Tiramisu, Michael!
Thanks for having me today for your tasting session. It was a great experience and a pleasure for me to be a part of the Cognac team.
It was a terrific event and I really hope these continue indefinitely. There are so many possibilities for us to try in these tastings. I agree with you that Sophie’s idea of having us try as yet unknown producers would be wonderful. I know I would follow the recommendations of Max, Sophie & Taylor with no questions asked.
Our Armagnac Roadtrip 2023
Since 2009, our mission has been to shine the light on the tremendous work being done by Cognac’s producers, large and small. But we love trying new things, so we refuse to be shy about our newfound love of Armagnac. This year - in 2023 - we jumped in the car and made the short trip down south to get our very own crash course in all things Armagnac.
cabinet7
Bringing together sellers and collectors
cabinet7 was born as a spin-off of the world's largest Cognac online retailer cognac-expert.com which we started back in 2009.
From day one we have been receiving messages over on Cognac Expert from people located all over the world who have come to find an old bottle in their possession. Rare finds are presented to us, most often with the same question: What is the value of my bottle? Should I keep it in my collection or drink it?
After giving free appraisals on these Cognac bottles, we later started with Armagnac valuations – and allowed bottle owners to sell their bottles via our online Cognac marketplace shop, reaching a worldwide audience of Cognac lovers and collectors.
In order to professionalize and focus on giving the best possible appraisals possbile for an extended variety of spirits and bottles, cabinet7 is our latest project which is now able to receive increased submissions from users presenting their Whisky, Rum, Brandy and even old wine finds.
Cognac Expert Blog
It only makes sense that Cognac Expert, whose very existence began as a blog, continues with rich blog content today. Blog articles in 2022 varied from long-form educational pieces, to new product reviews, to user-generated articles, to interesting themed list articles, and to our highly anticipated Family Tasting series. In 2022 we had a fantastic XO Family Tasting; we’ll certainly be back in 2023 with more in this format. What’s needless to say is that blog content is very close to our heart. Cognac is so much more than just a town, a region, and a spirit. It is our world and these articles open the door for you into our world. Happy reading!
Family Tasting Hors d’Age - Cognacs blindly tasted
No year would be complete without one of our family tastings. This time we upped the level and did an extensive - and completely blind - Hors d’Age family tasting. We called upon the family members and Cognac Expert team members to conduct this tasting. Blind tasting never lies, and the results were fun to discover as a family and team, and then share with you.
We’ll certainly do another tasting of this style in 2024; we could not imagine a year without this.
Age Statement in Cognac: It’s About Time
It is quite interesting to compare across spirit categories focusing on the notion of age, and how it is communicated on the bottle to the buyer. Scotch whisky makes wide use of the age statement, a statement of years aged in barrel which represents the age of the youngest whisky in the bottle.
Rum too makes indications of age, but on the whole they are considered less reliable than with scotch whisky. Rum production occurs the world over and each country has different regulations governing the topic of age indications. Cognac too has age mentions, which on the whole are not misleading but require time and attention to fully comprehend.
This long form article of sorts will explore the ins and outs of the concept of age in Cognac. Let me preface this by saying that I do not intend to lend support for a move away from blends to age statements, nor am I lending support for blends over specific age indications. The goal is to simply inform and present an in-depth exploration of age in Cognac – no more, no less. Let’s jump into the weeds.
The 11 best Cognacs under $100
When you think of fine Cognac, perhaps you imagine King Louis XV sipping it from his gilded cup, the taste of complex flavors from rich oak and toasted vanilla beans to wintry spices delighting his royal taste buds. However, you don’t have to break the bank to enjoy great cognac and add to your home bar.
The art of Cognac selection doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune, neither do you need to be a complex sipper. It’s a question that we’re often asked and one that deserves some serious research. But who to entrust with this crucial task? We put our heads together and agreed that was definitely a task for Sophie’s fastidious palate.
Unsurprisingly, she didn’t hesitate to take on this oh-so-arduous voyage of discovery—selflessly sipping her way through a selection of eaux-de-vie. And the result? A rather special selection of the 11 best Cognacs under $100.

How to manage a bulk Cognac project
Just over ten years ago, Cognac Expert started as a blog. Since then it has developed into a full-fledged business whose aim is to tell the story of small production Cognac. At the core of the Cognac Expert DNA is to discover, promote and sell Cognac from these smaller, more artisanal producers. While Cognac Expert is and always will be a content-rich B2C online shop, our activities have expanded throughout the years, notably with business-to-business.
These past years during which we launched the B2B activity, have seen us take on different projects of all shapes and sizes, for business clients all around the world. While each project has been successful in its own way, plenty of opportunities for valuable learning have taken place.
Spotlight on Cognac Producers
Monsieur Metreau
Max recently set off from Beaulieu and headed down past Chalais into the rolling and wooded hills of the surrounding area. Some small producers he encountered have since retired or otherwise stopped their production, but one artisanal producer just welcomed Max in and ultimately led to a wonderfully pleasant Cognac discovery. We are still very keen on exploring the lesser known areas of the region. And since we are based in the southern part of the Charente, one of our favorite areas to explore is this very southern corner of the region, deep in the Bons Bois cru, flirting even with the borders of some of the Bordeaux wine appellations. We know many of their Cognacs have found their way into your glasses - and your hearts.
Cognac Martinaud
The mesmerizing Cognac House Martinaud is exactly the kind of small family houses we want to bring to your attention: Protecting Cognac's Diversity! We were fortunate to uncover two incredible value-for-money old Cognacs: A Cognac from the 1950s and another Cognac from the 1960s – truly a remarkable, well matured find! We are delighted to share this hidden treasure with you. This remarkable family-operated estate, now in its eighth generation, has been skillfully producing exceptional Cognacs since 1847, all while upholding Cognac's diversity and adopting eco-friendly practices. The Martinaud family's commitment to safeguarding Cognac's rich heritage and flavors is precisely the type of producer we adore.
Dolmen de Pierre Folle
Central to Cognac Expert's ethos is not only celebrating the renowned houses, whose Cognacs have undoubtedly captured your admiration, but also advocating for Cognac's diversity by spotlighting its lesser-known producers. This is absolutely near and dear to our hearts. Our exploration often takes us to remote corners of the region, particularly the southern reaches of the Bons Bois cru, not far from our home at Beaulieu, in search of undiscovered artisans. We recently pulled back the curtain on Choloux and Metreau, and now - during one of these same drive-by explorative outings - we found another stunning Bons Bois gem and fascinating character pursuing his craft of artisanal Cognac production.

Unbeatable at the offer price (as far as I can judge)
I have never perceived an apricot and peach flavour as pronounced as this one. Combined with baking flavours, the cognac smells very distinctly like a mushy, extremely tasty fruit tart. I can also detect a hint of citrus fruit, but I have to make a real effort. You don't even notice the alcohol content....
A true "feel good" cognac
This is the first time I taste this cognac. It is a blend from different crus and three different centuries. At first it is a bit shy on the nose, but it opens up after some time in the glass. I find it rather fruity. I also find some vanilla. In mouth it is very pleasant with plenty of fruit notes....
A fine Cognac - Godet Hors d´Age Cognac
Golden colour with amber highlights. Fine nose on candied fruits, citrus fruits, stewed apricots and peaches with some cloves, cinnamon and woody notes. Dried oranges and orange peels on the palate; fine juicy sweetness of candied lemons. The finish is of medium length, with an elegant ending on...
Growth Area: Blend
Cognac Age: Hors d'Age
ABV: 42%
Godet Hors d’Age returned in 2023, maybe for one last time! Since we genuinely enjoyed that Cognac, we’ve decided to bring back the Godet Hors d’Age but this time in a standard 700ml bottle. This will be the final opportunity to get this Godet Hors d’Age Cognac bottled at 42% abv. It is a multi-cru Cognac blend containing eaux-de-vie that span multiple centuries, with Cognac from the 21st, 20th, and 19th centuries making up the blend - although the amount of 19th century Cognac in the final blend is likely small. It’s a “beyond age” Hors d’Age by definition, with an equally appealing beyond age retro label.
Sold out. Sorry, you missed it.

A Classic
There’s a wonderful richness to the nose from the first moment. Plums and prunes, mango, hints of mint and tobacco, with some old leather. Plenty of old oak as well. Magnificent. Deep and a dark like an intense compote with gentle sweetness that rolls into rich, spices. It’s like a fruitcake...
Best cognac I have had so far THANK U JACKY
This is by far my favorite Cognac. The bold and smooth robust flavor with the finish of the walnut with the mango and the aromatic spice! This is truly an extreme palate revelation. The only problem is once you start, you can’t stop. I have to call on the cognac god (Jacky Navarre) to help me stop...
A wonderful surprise!
A wonderful cognac! On one side, with so many positive reviews it wasn't a surprise. But still, when I tasted it for the first time, there was that "wow" moment - A perfect balance between age, complexity, and aromas. Fruity, with hints of floral, wood, and a bit of spice.
The Hors d'Age Cognac - Aromatherapy Session
At the opening - the initial aroma of sweet sour-cream honey light port wine with hints of flowers, like rose petals. Hints of pastry or freshly-baked crepes. No ethanol spirit smell. Alcohol is integrated into the cognac aroma. In The Glass: First 5-7 minutes scent of sour-cream honey,...
Smooth criminal
The sip was tasteful and full of body it was exceptionally robust. I didn’t think that Navarre Souvenir Impérial Hors d’Age Grande Champagne would be sold at the price of a beggar and be so good. Get this one just for the hell of it, you’ll see it was worth it ten folds.
Great cognac, multi-leveled with great finish
I just finished my second bottle of this and will be buying more since it's becoming one of my favorites. It has so many flavors going on I find it difficult to pick out one particular fruit or spice. It's very well balanced between fruit, spice, and some earthy tones. Very good lasting finish.
Growth Area: Grande Champagne
Cognac Age: Hors d'Age
ABV: 40%
Jacky Navarre, a magician among the Cognac producers, has stunned the region with his ability to create artisanal bottles such as the Navarre Souvenir Impérial Hors d’Age Grande Champagne Cognac. It is fruity, multifaceted and complex from beginning to end.
Aged for half a century, this Hors d’Age is an ‘Imperial’ example of Jacky’s ability to produce Cognac blends from the Grande Champagne. It has undergone a process unlike most: non-chill filtered, nor colored or boiséd with wooden chips. It is, just as it was meant to be - straight from the barrel.

A Cognac vs. The Inflation
Minimal Presentation - Maximum Liquid.
In a global economic downturn, with consumer prices soaring, increasing inflation and GDPs plunging, our high-quality Cognac bottle stands out as a symbol of resilience: We strategically sourced our liquid from a non-brand supplier in the Cognac region. By doing so, we bypassed paying brand premiums, focusing instead on the pure quality of the product itself.
Growth Area: Petite Champagne
ABV: 43%
Additives: No additives, natural color
Bottle size: 70cl
Following tasting and selection, the bottle was swiftly integrated into Cognac Expert with only the most essential product details. The label, crafted in a brief five minutes, effectively sidesteps the need for costly professional design services. We repurposed existing photography, negating the need for an expensive new photoshoot, and we pared down marketing efforts to the bare basics.
La Récession offers you an old Petite Champagne Cognac in a bottle, devoid of any unnecessary organizational expense, advertising or costly production & packaging. It's a high-quality product presented to you in the simplest possible manner: everything you need and nothing you don't.
Surprise: Our stock is limited to a small quantity of bottles remaining. These are reserves from returns and anticipated damages that, fortunately, did not occur, thanks to the careful packing by our warehouse team. Act fast.

Super value
Vanilla and a little creamy chocolate, prunes and a touch of rhubarb, plenty of floral notes to add interest. Nice creamy arrival, followed by waves of stewed fruit, coconut, outbursts of fruity sugar, and silky spices. Nice spicy finish, with traces of old tobacco, cinnamon, and a little pepper. Delicious...
Absolute Must Try!
The Cognac is very smooth, with a floral and fruity taste on the palate. You taste the notes of lemon, lime, and apricot. It has a mild spicey finish that is compatible with the taste of honey. The taste is extremely smooth and very easy to drink. This was an excellent Cognac. I would highly recommend...

Excellent variety of fruits and spice.
I get lots of various fruit flavors and aromas and some spice. I prefer a little less spice, but that's just me. This is pretty typical though. Overall, it's very enjoyable with lots of lingering flavors. Good complexity. Very good cognac for the money.
Exceptional quality and refinement
I first had this cognac while in Switzerland. I could not believe the aroma and refined taste. It has a fruit forward taste with a pleasant smooth finish. I knew I would not be able to find this in the US so I only had this when I really had time to enjoy it. How happy I was that I could get this...
Growth Area: Fine Champagne
Cognac Age: XO Cognac

Created with eaux-de-vie descending from two premium crus, the Grande and Petite Champagne, the Audry XO Cognac is a unique insight into the precious treasures of the Audry Paradis cellar. Created from blends of the original reserve, as an Extra Old Cognac it has been impressively aged between 12 and 30 years. With multiple layers thanks to the finesse of the Fine Champagne, it is something to be savored right to the very end. The Grande and Petite Champagne are particularly celebrated thanks to the unique composition of the soil. Due to thousands of years of fossilization and its particular maritime climate, the soil has a high chalk and limestone content. This makes for faster drainage, and the vines are therefore naturally watered throughout the year. What’s more, the undulating hillsides of the Fine Champagne equal optimum exposure to sunlight. All of these factors make for a very refined and lengthy finish in the eaux-de-vie of the Audry Extra Old Cognac, which is made of more or less equal parts of spirit from each terroir.

Growth Area: Fine Champagne
Cognac Age: XO Cognac - aged for at least 35 years
ABV: 40%
The Vallein Tercinier XO Vieille Reserve Cognac is a delectable old blend of eaux-de-vie from the two premier growth areas of the region. It's designated as a Fine Champagne, meaning that a minimum of 50% comes from Grande Champagne, the rest from Petite Champagne.
The youngest component in the blend has been aged for at least 35 years, and this has led to an extremely elegant, round, and deliciously mature taste experience. A deserving award winner, this is a great example of why small producers can provide you so much more for your money. One of the most outstanding aspects of this wonderfully old Cognac is its exceptional finish. Multi-faceted, and almost never-ending, it has to be tasted to be truly appreciated.
Martell Blue Swift Spirit

Flavour bomb
Nose... Fresh Parfume / Mint Taste...Mix of fruit One of my favorites
Growth Area: Blend
Spirit Age: Aged for at least 4 years
ABV : 40%
Redefining one of their most classic editions once again with the Martell Blue Swift Spirit, this is the first drink made from the iconic Martell VSOP Cognac, finished in Kentucky Bourbon barrels. The latest limited edition is a nod to the maison's history as the first to ship its Cognac to the United States in 1783 - an embodiment of their status as a truly international brand. Martell Blue Swift, therefore, represents a stunning union of French savoir-faire and American ingenuity. Martell is the oldest of the Big Four Cognac houses, and so their Blue Swift logo has come to represent everything about their history.
Martell Blue Swift has been aged for at least four years in French red oak, and then transferred to bourbon casks to give it an aromatic and exotic profile of banana, vanilla, coconut and menthol, with a final finish of toasted oak. This unique flavor profile demonstrates the house of Martell’s ability to innovate beyond the borders of the Cognac denomination.
