Verkostungsnotiz

Eye: Almost black it looks so dark - indicating the long amount of time that it has spent aging in barrels.

Nose: A dense nose of very old Cognac; old Madeira, and old Balsamic. Notes of blackcurrant buds, exotic passionfruit also emerge. The signature of a fantastic Grande Champagne Cognac is there, in a successful tension between thick and elegant notes. In another vintage, these qualities would be contradictory - but somehow they work.

Palate: On the mouth, it is round and creamy. The rancio is pronounced, with tannins supporting it. The finish is very dense, rich, slightly watery - and elegant. A rare find!

Cognac Jean Grosperrin “Tresor” No.25 - from the Grande Champagne

The best thing about a Cognac from Jean Grosperrin, is its mysterious origins. Grosperrin “Tresor” No.25 Grande Champagne Cognac comes from a single barrel of 400 liters, and has been referenced for many years in the Grosperrin cellars. It was only during an inventory in 2015 that they became aware of its exceptional quality. This is a rare treasure that should not be missed. It has been proofed slightly higher than usual at 42.1% ABV, and no additives or colorings are added to Grosperrin Cognacs.

The Grande Champagne has millions of years of geology to thank for its unique make-up. It has typically chalky soil and a maritime climate. Approximately 85 million years beforehand, the area made up the Atlantic seabed, when sea levels were particularly high. Millions of fossils were deposited, forming the fine Cognac and lengthy mature Cognacs that linger.

As with the other Cognacs at the Grosperrin estate, the cask had been stored in a tiny cellar with no electricity, and had never been topped up after a large amount had evaporated. They were left with far smaller stocks, and it is for this reason that the remaining spirit has been guarded carefully and maintained to the highest of standards by the grandson of the Grosperrin Maison. Here, he operates 30 hectares on two small properties.

Jean Grosperrin believes that the quality of a Cognac is directly related to the quality of the individual producing and maturing it. By visiting each winegrower and vineyard, hearing the story of the distillery and maturing techniques, he understands the precious nature of a Cognac before even tasting it. Each one of the Cognacs that he selects for the Collection tells its own story - one of older Cognac making techniques, without technology or guaranteed abundant harvests.

Über Grosperrin Cognac

This relatively new, independent cognac house was created in 1992 and the brand named after its founder. The actual name of the cognac house is La Gabare and it is one of the few independent houses left in the region of Cognac. A family run firm, La Gabare is all about creating and marketing the finest of old cognacs. They do this under two brand names – Cognac de Collection Jean Grosperrin and Le Roch.
