Godet Today: The house of Godet Cognac is a cherished family business rooted in tradition and driven by a passion for crafting exceptional spirits. Led by the 15th generation, the Godet brothers - Jean-Edouard, Maxime, and Cyril - continue their family's legacy in the enchanting port town of La Rochelle on the west coast of France. Nestled at Chateau de la Sauzaie, where land and sea meet, they combine rare artisanal know-how with a solid resilience to create clean, crystal-clear, additive-free Cognacs. From their vineyards exposed to the Atlantic's gentle climate and invigorating force, their Cognacs capture the essence of the region, offering a captivating sensory experience.
History of Godet
Travel back in time to the 16th Century when Bonaventure Godet, a Dutch merchant and long-distance sailor, dropped anchor in La Rochelle. This strategic port town, sheltered by the Pertuis d'Antioche sound and graced by the islands of Ré and Oléron, became the birthplace of Cognac. Exploiting the region's oldest vineyards, Bonaventure established his winery on the banks of the Maubec canal, exporting his wines throughout Northern Europe. Over the centuries, the Godet family's bond with Cognac deepened, evidenced by Jean Godet's ennoblement under Louis XIV, the official establishment of the Godet House by Gédéon-Louis Godet, and the resilience of Auguste-Alphonse Godet during the phylloxera infestation. Through prohibition and World War II, the Godet House faced challenges head-on, always preserving their heritage. After an interlude of American ownership, Jean-Jacques Godet successfully reclaimed the company, steering it towards a new era of growth and international recognition. Today, the Godet family's passion for crafting exceptional Cognacs remains unwavering, as they continue to honor their history while pushing the boundaries of excellence.
