This is fresh and vivacious from the first moment you nose it. As a whisky drinker I have struggled with the concept of terroir, but to me this has all the hallmarks of the premier cru. There’s an astonishing glass-like clarity to this cognac. Orchard fruits abound with apricots, apples, peaches and if you keep going you’ll get to an underlying sherbetty citrus element.
It’s sweet when it hits your tongue, but the vibrancy and sparkle brings joy to your mouth. The youthfulness surfaces from time to time and there are little spikes of heat and bitterness, but they are generally overwhelmed by the fun bits.
The finish is long warm and enveloped with cinnamon and sugar. The bitterness might disturb a wine drinker, but wouldn’t trouble anyone familiar with even a mild dose of hops.
Ok, so it’s not got any great age and it’s not going to please anyone looking for silky smoothness, but in my view this is a very well priced bottle and an exemplar for its age. I love the clarity and the wonderful nose and arrival in the mouth. I will buy more.
