Competent cognac, at a bargain price.

Braastad XO is a competent cognac, at a bargain price.
Nose: rich aromas of rancio. Very strong aromas of nuts. The box mentions hazelnut, but I got roasted caramel glazed walnuts. Earthy umami mushroom and truffles. Coffee notes develop with time. I like the nose.
Palate: smooth. The rancio from the nose, carries on the palate. Spicy oak and vanilla. Sweet palate, but the oak and spices balance out the sweetness. More umami and truffles. There is an interesting floral note of violets, in the background.
Finish: medium long. Leather, rancio and light oak.
Overall: this is a simple, entry level XO, but it’s easy drinking and approachable. I paid only $89, so this is good value. Decent choice for anyone, who wants to explore XO cognacs, without spending $200+ on a bottle.

Take a tiny sip to prep your palate for the sensory experience to come. Take a second larger sip, and gently roll the cognac around, etting it come into contact with every corner of your mouth. Focus on the perceived textural sensations. Are the sensations round and rich or fresh and elegant? Is the overall mouthfeel intense, balanced, disjointed, or lacking presence? In short, how does the cognac feel in your mouth?
