Planat VSOP Cognac: Natural Complexity
Created using only organic eaux-de-vie from all six main Cognac regions, the Planat VSOP Cognac is an exiting example of what modern organic Cognac can be. Matured for a minimum of four years in French oak, it has developed a complexity and palate beyond its age. Most importantly, it is a 100% organic product, a statement which it proudly bears on its label. This means that all aspects of production - from growing the grapes to fermentation and distilling - has been done without the addition fo any fertilizers, pesticides, additives or preservatives. The result is a lively, aromatic and intensely honeyed Cognac with the potential to become a modern classic.
Cognac Planat was founded in 1828 by Abel Planat and quickly rose in the ranks, competing well with the big producers. More than just a businessman, Abel played an important part in the town of Cognac’s development as their Mayor. During his tenure, he developed the town’s first public drinking water system. His son Oscar, in turn, invested greatly in the area as a member of parliament and the public park he founded still exists today.
Today, Planat has changed hands many times, but in this way it has also been able to keep an eye on the future of Cognac making. The result is a dynamic company: only a small number of organic winegrowers in the four main crus supply the materials to make Planat Cognac. As the first organic operator in the region, this exciting Cognac house continues to prove that a commitment to the environment can foster great products. Planat Cognacs are known for their fruitiness and aromatic complexity, thanks to the quality of materials used as well as the skill of their Cellar Master, using time, casks and climate as his tools.
Presentation of the Bottle
Planat VS Cognac comes in a wide, modern-look bottle, with simple labels that show the credentials of the liquid inside. Little details make it stand out: black foil, textured paper and embossed glass all add up to a premium feel. As with all Planat releases, this is a great value purchase.
How to Enjoy
While we often recommend drinking aged Cognac neat, this particular VSOP is the perfect base for a Sidecar cocktail, with its spice and honey aromas pairing wonderfully with citrus. It would also make an excellent digestif on its own, served in tulip glasses at room temperature - or slightly chilled.
