The ABK6 XO Family Reserve Cognac is the oldest in the ABK6 range and has deservedly won many awards. This single estate Cognac has been produced entirely on the grounds of Chez Maillard and aged for over ten years, producing a wonderful depth of flavor and rich aromatic notes. One of the signature aromas found in ABK6 Cognacs is freshly-baked pastry, and this expression certainly holds true to this. On the nose, you can also enjoy all the hints of dried fruit, nuts, and liquorice aromas typical of well-matured Cognac.
ABK6’s domain Chez Maillard sits on an exceptional chalky hilltop location, right in the middle of the family’s vineyards. Run by a father and daughter team, this house produces only their single estate Cognac, with all steps of the process - growing, distillation, maturation, blending and bottling - controlled by the family.
Presented in a smart bottle that boasts clean lines and elegant simplicity, this is a modern release that stands out immediately. The bottle is weighty, featuring embossed details in the glass, a detailed label and black foil on the neck. Of course, a matching presentation box accompanies this Cognac.
This fantastically complex Cognac is a wonderful digestif. Serve neat in tulip glasses at room temperature, either on its own or as the accompaniment to a rich chocolate-based dessert.
I tasted their VSOP the other day and really liked it, probably the best VSOP cognac under $60 on the market. So.. i got this XO and I also really like it, not as good as their VSOP though, a bit heavier and more complex.. probably because of the longer time in the oak cask.
Owned by Francis Abécassis (a homonym of ABK6 when pronounced in French), ABK6 Cognac is a relatively young brand based in the Domaine de Chez Maillard near the village of Claix. The brand is known for its choice to produce single estate Cognacs, with its eaux-de-vie being carefully selected from their 220 hectares of land, specifically for their aromatic intensity and indulgence. The label has shaken up the industry by introducing a young and modern spirit to a traditional drink, without compromising on quality. The company is now one of the largest independent producers in Cognac, and also owns the brands Leyrat, Reviseur and Grands Domaines. Attention to detail is applied to every single aspect of production at ABK6, with sustainable growing methods, Charentaise distillation and precise blending. It’s no wonder the group has taken home over 60 awards in recent years.
