Courvoisier Vintage Connoisseur Collection 21 Years Cognac

Courvoisier Cognac

This Courvoisier is a 21 years old Vintage Cognac. Courvoisier 21 is a new product from the famous Cognac house. The eaux-de-vie used for this Cognac come from the Grande Champagne region, the cognac was aged in the company's warehouses for over two decades in fine grain oak casks. The Connoisseur Collection is a special one: As Cognac has not been able to declare age statement because of BNIC restrictions (tracking, certification), Courvoisier had the smart idea to develop an in-house tracking system over 20 years ago to allow decleration of age on specific eaux-de-vie. That makes Courvoisier the absolute firstmover of the big 4 producers. Other producers market their cognacs with rough estimates regarding age of cognac, which can vary. This strategic move will probably allow Courvoisier to make their Cognac more transparent, easier to understand and will appeal to other spirits consumers, such as Malt Whisky drinkers. This Cognac is a good digestif after a heavy meal.

Tasting Notes

The colour: Amber. On the nose: Early hints of hazelnut, then dried apricots and figs, also some smooth spices like white pepper and coriander. In the mouth: Some orange and ginger bread, while the aftertaste is quite smooth and long.

Courvoisier is amongst the four leading cognac houses in the world. Legend has it that the emperor Napoleon himself chose Courvoisier as his preferred cognac, therefore Courvoisier is often referred to as “The Cognac of Napoleon”. The company dates back to 1828 and since has its headquarters in the town of Jarnac. With prestigious bottles such as Courvoisier Napoleon or Josephine, the cognac house is at the top of the luxury spirits market. The drink is strongly engrained in US Hip Hop culture with Busta Rhymes and P Diddy dedicating the song “Pass the Courvoisier” to the traditional cognac.

Whisky, Aging and Cognac: why whisky might have to change its format
02-01-2014 / It’s interesting that the cognac market has never really followed in the footsteps of whisky, preferring to stick to the age old descriptions of age in the form of VS, VSOP, XO and such like, rather than putting the ages of the products on the bottles themselves.  (Although Courvoisier have dabbled as such, with the Read full article...
