Eye: It appears in the glass in a beautiful luminous gold.

Nose: The nose is very gourmand, with beautiful notes of yellow fruit and citrus. It becomes more complex with spices such as pepper and Christmas spices.

Palate: The palate is elegant on the attack, then livens up with a flight of spices, sometimes warm, sometimes fresh, with hints of aniseed in a biscuity background like a Mannele. The finish mellows, with fruity notes, candied orange and grapefruit peel for a soft bitterness and a touch of honey.

Description

Distillerie Bertrand St. Wendelin Souffle Volcanique Whisky

St Wendelin Le Souffle Volcanique is produced by Distillerie Bertrand in Uberach, Alsace.

Made from organic malted barley, it is twice distilled in a Holstein copper column still. This is followed by 8 years aging in new oak barrels, then 2 years in barrels that previously held the Alsatian Grand Cru Rangen de Thann, one of Alsace’s and France’s finest wines from a steep volcanic terroir in southern Alsace. This is therefore a 10 year old whisky.

Bottled at 46.2% on St. Wendelin's Day (October 20), this single malt single cask (cask #413) IGP Whisky d'Alsace offers fruity and spicy notes of great finesse.

Serge Whiskyfun Review

Eight years in new oak, then two years in a cask having sheltered some Alsatian wine from Rangen de Thann, in the extreme south of our little region. The Rangen is a volcanic grand cru, hence the name of this whisky made by some of the pioneers of Alsatian – and French – whisky, with their master blender extraordinaire Jean Metzger. It's carrying the recent 'Whisky d'Alsace' Geographical Indication (which stipulates that you have to say 'hoppla' every time you fill a barrel – joking). Colour: gold. Nose: gentler, with once more some paprika, quite some pink pepper, some ham, caraway, blood oranges, chen-pi, then rather a lot of gingerbread, Läckerli (Basel is not far from the Rangen), Alsatian anis bredala… Well it's well an Alsatian matter indeed, the GI was deserved! Mouth: great fun. Bags and bags of gingerbread and even more of those anise cookies, plus Italian bitters and vermouths (did you know there was a Fernet Branca factory in Alsace? It's become a superb modern art museum). Finish: long, more on citrus, tangerines, grapefruits, touch of myrtle. Clove and green oak honey in the aftertaste. Comments: loved their Souffle Marno-Calcaire earlier this year, love this one just as much, despite or perhaps thanks to its 'accentuated idiosyncrasies'. 86 points.
