Maine Giraud

Le Maine Giraud

A magical estate and Cognac producer, steeped in French literary legacy, Maine Giraud owes its fascinating history to poet Alfred de Vigny, and its innovative personality to the four generations that have taken its reigns since the domaine began Cognac production in 1938.

Uncover the heart and soul of Maine Giraud as well as its fabulous collection of Cognacs in our story.

An ode to Alfred Vigny

The story of Maine Giraud all begins with Alfred de Vigny. A military man, political activist, author and romantic poet of the 19th century – this remarkable man owned the Maine Giraud estate until his death in 1863. Laying the foundations for the domaine’s development into a Cognac house, the Maine Giraud roots stem back to Alfred de Vigny as it was he who planted the estate’s first vines – selling his wines at the local counters in order to reinvest in the estate.

After re-building the chateau’s ‘Ivory Tower’, Alfred de Vigny spent much of his time up their writing poems close to his heart about tumultuous relationships with his mother and wife Marie Dorval. Notably, it was in the tower that he wrote The Death of the Wolf in 1838 and La Bouteille à la mer.

Meanwhile, his earlier writings date back to 1814 are characterised by a deep pessimism and disenchanted vision of society. After dedicating so much sentiment and devotion into his work, Alfred de Vigny passed away in 1862, following a long battle with cancer – supported by patience and stoicism. Today his legacy remains with a firm place in history as a widely recognised French poet and early French Romanticist.

An ode to Alfred Vigny

With Alfred de Vigny’s soul still floating around the Maine Giraud chateau, those behind the Cognac house today have been pouring their heart and soul into combining the love of Cognac with the estate’s a unique architectural and literary heritage since 1938.

Today, producing quality Cognac, wine and Pineau des Charentes is at the core of such a special place and Maine Giraud’s 4th generation cellar master Mathieur Durand leads the way in following sustainable agricultural processes where innovation is his team’s daily life.

While Cognac is undoubtedly at the forefront of Maine Giraud, the brand identifies as so much more. Set in a picturesque part of rural France, you’ll find many hiking trails and Romanesque churches surrounding the estate. At the chateau itself, a museum dedicated to Alfred de Vigny can be visiting free of charge.

Meanwhile the team dedicate a very lively programme around their Cognac production. From seminars to concerts, dinners, theatrical events and exhibitions (from May to December the reception hall is home to various painting exhibitions) – there’s usually something happening in addition to agriculture on and around the estate.
