As delicate on the shelf as it is in the mouth, this is a special bottle for a special occasion. The Léopold Croizet Valentine Cognac has been aged in the oldest of the maturing cellars at Maison Léopold Croizet, where the warmth of its beaten earth floor has softened the effect of contact with the oak. Native to the Fins Bois region, the producer has sourced all the eaux-de-vie for their Valentine’s Day bottling from this underrated cru. Covered by clay and chalk soils known as groies, the Fins Bois has a lot of characteristics in common with the Champagne regions, but can also display a more rustic edge. The heavy soil is around 60% clay, known for producing round, supple eaux-de-vie that age fairly quickly, with vivid and fruity aromas that stay true to the original grape character.
The Croizet family have always passed down knowledge from father and mother to daughter and son, keeping their skills a closely guarded secret. With a fighting spirit to survive, they have overcome many challenges over the years - not least the Phylloxera epidemic of the 1870s, when Amelina Croizet was pivotal in ensuring that the family’s vineyards survived. Over the years, one thing that has remained constant has been to keep the traditional methods firmly in mind, whilst also advancing the Cognac making process.
Today, the family company is in the hands of Leopold Croizet, the latest in a long line of grape growers. Passionate about expanding further, he has acquired further vineyards stretching beyond the Fins Bois region into Petite Champagne - creating the potential for a whole new range of eaux-de-vie with a wider appeal. Regardless of where they harvest their grapes, however, Léopold Croizet Cognac only uses organic fertilizers on their land, keeping firmly to the traditional methods of their ancestors.
Strikingly slim and elegant, the bottle features gold foil on the neck and a delicate label showing a floral springtime scene, beautifully complementing the amber liquid contained within.
Finely crafted Cognacs like this deserve attention: pour gently into a tulip glass and let it rest for 30 seconds before taking a sip. To allow the aromas to open up further, a small dash of mineral water could be added.
