Description
Malternative Belgium Cognac No. 25 René Rivière
Distilled in 1925 and resetting in dame jeanne since 1983
This Cognac stands as a timeless distillate from the era between two global conflicts. It boasts prominent notes of sun-dried peaches, figs, raisins, and a hint of gentle leather and subtle licorice. Think of it as almond-topped brioche with a drizzle of salted caramel. Its floral notes are exceptional, with traces of jasmine and crushed dandelion. The strength is undeniably compelling, marked by consistent rancio from start to finish. Its finish leaves you in awe and at a loss for words. Impeccable!
Nestled in Saint-Sulpice de Cognac is the exquisite estate "Chez Gauthier" belonging to Jean-Jacques Vidal. Sourced from the Borderies, the tiniest among the 6 crus, this Cognac is made entirely of the Folle Blanche grape—a variety that faced great adversity during the 1875 phylloxera crisis. Thanks to the resilient vineyards of the Rivière family, this specific distillation took place in 1925. The original creator of these Cognacs passed away several decades ago, but his legacy remains in the dame jeannes, meticulously maintained by his successor, Jean-Jacques Vidal. Known affectionately as JJ, the now-retired professor exudes the charm that encapsulates the heart of the Cognac region. A visit to JJ's is reminiscent of a stroll through a museum, where one soaks in history and culture.
Given such rich lineage, it's little wonder these Cognacs have earned acclaim in France, and beyond. Their unparalleled quality is no secret. It must be a privilege for Malternative Belgium to encapsulate and share such gems, as they play their part in preserving the mobile heritage of the Cognac region.
