Nose: Upon first pour a spirit nip and an antique wood varnish note - not at all unpleasant, adds a degree of sharpness which belies the Cognac's age. Then come the fruits: mushy overripe banana and stewed peaches. Butter heating in a pan. Milk chocolate and a runny light caramel. Dusting of soft spices. A little earthiness, old world rustic charm.

Palate: Three French words: patissier, gourmand, and fondu - all of which evoke seductive, dessert like tastes. Wonderful feeling of a natural sweetness yet counterbalanced by the lively earthy and woody tones. Alive! Various stewed fruits: peaches, nectarines and bananas. Warming unabrasive spice. Great balance between the stewed fruit, spice, and old wood notes. Creamy nougat and toffee. Again, this loaded natural sweetness. Fantastic on the palate, which exceeds the already good nose.

Finish: Long with great flavor intensity. Precise. Muscular but with zero aggressiveness, or astringency. Wonderful!

Description

Malternative Belgium Cognac No. 20 Cognac Raffaud

Discover the hidden gem of cognac production in the heart of Borderies, the smallest of the 6 crus. Saint-Sulpice-de-Cognac, a rustic commune, boasts 4,000 hectares of vineyards, representing just 5% of the total cognac production. Surrounded by its own vineyards, the Raffaud family domain, "La Maison Rouge," offers a unique experience for cognac enthusiasts. Behind its yellow and red facades lies a family that breathes cognac, with Michel and Annie now retired, but the family legacy continues.

This secret gem only sells its young eau de vie to the big brands, never under its own name. After a warm introduction, Malternative was fortunate enough to taste their exceptional 66-year-old barrel-bottled cognac and pineau des charentes, which exude character. In a small chais with only 15 cognac barrels, the cognac has matured in a 150-liter cask, producing just 112 bottles at natural cask strength, proof that sometimes less is more.
