Drinking Cognac straight from the barrel has been an important part of enjoying Cognac for many years, and a fine Vintage is certainly appreciated in the Charente region. The Prunier 1969 Grande Champagne Vintage Cognac is a unique expression of the 1969 harvest in the Premier Cru. Bottled at natural cask strength after being aged for 49 years in oak barrels, it is a beautiful Prunier Millésime 1969 Cognac that offers a perfect snapshot of the Grande Champagne. Available in limited quantities, it is Cognac in its most fleeting and natural form.
The Grande Champagne cru is characterized by its chalky soil and unique maritime climate. Cognacs from this region typically take longer to age, but are certainly worth the wait. The long maturation makes for complex spirits that linger in the mouth. 85 million years ago, the area was more or less the corner of the Atlantic seabed when sea levels were at their high levels. The millions of fossils and seashells were deposited in the area and formed part of the Santonian era. It is this very combination of factors that contributes to fine and floral eaux-de-vie.
Located in the heart of Cognac town, the Maison Prunier is truly unique. They are one of the oldest producers in the Grande Champagne. Their Paradise cellar is said to benefit from the underground river that flows beneath the cellars, giving the products their remarkable taste. For over 250 years, Maison Prunier have been creating unique Vintage expressions.

The Vintage Cognacs by Pruniers are presented beautifully. The bottle is simple and classic, with a gold wax seal and old fashioned labeling. It is bottled at natural cask strength 54.5% ABV.
This review is based on a sample bottle. Liquorice notes are strong but elegant with intense rancio in both nose and palate. The alcohol content is well controlled for this vintage cask strength cognac. This is priced surprisingly reasonable for a Prunier vintage cognac. Highly recommended.

Steeped in tradition, Cognac Prunier is a family run firm with cellars in the heart of the town of Cognac. The house does not own its own vineyards, instead, they buy the eaux-de-vie directly from supplying vine growers and distillers each year, and then carry out the ageing process in their own cellars.
