Prunier 1975 Vintage Borderies Cognac: Christmas in a Glass

The grapes for this vintage Cognac by Prunier were harvested across the Borderies cru in 1975. Bottled in January 2010, it’s a limited edition of only 648 bottles. 1975 is often hailed as one of the greatest harvests of the 20th Century; the wet and cold winter led to a late bud-break, followed by a hot growing season and a late harvest of flavorful grapes, showing excellent acidity. The House of Prunier are widely considered masters of vintage Cognac, as this delicious example can testify. Bottled at a manageable cask strength of 43.9% and without any additives, the Prunier 1975 Vintage Borderies Cognac shows luscious aromas of nuts, chocolate and rancio.

One thing any Cognac connoisseur will make note of is the unique flavor that eaux-de-vie from the Borderies express.  The soil here exerts a unique character on the grapes grown across its chalky hills - many people will be pleasantly surprised by the notes of lavender on both the nose and palate. Not only is this a superb Cognac from an excellent harvest, but it is also one that will hold up to the great releases from neighboring vineyards in Grande and Petite Champagne.

Unlike larger Cognac houses, Maison Prunier do not grow their own grapes; they specialize in buying eaux-de-vie directly from growers and distillers. This way they can select the most exceptional and unusual vintages to age in their humid cellars by the river Charente. The company is still based in the medieval castle where it was founded all the way back in 1665. Today it’s run by the Burnez family, thanks to Jean Burnez who took over when his aunt’s husband Alphone Prunier passed away without any descendants. Under the watchful eye of Jean’s children, we hope to see many more exceptional vintages from this grand Cognac house for years to come.

Presentation of the Bottle

This vintage Cognac is presented in a traditional wax-sealed bottle and a wooden gift box. The intricate, classic label neatly identifies the individual bottle number - one of only a few hundred units.

The bottles used for Prunier vintages have been inspired by a hand-blown bottle used in the 19th Century by the family of Prunier’s manager Claude Burnez. The original bottle contained air bubbles in the glass, which are emulated today by manually injecting air into the glass. It may be a time-consuming process, but the result is a stunning (some may say flawless) expression of Borderies Cognac.

How to Enjoy Prunier 1975 Vintage Borderies Cognac

To fully appreciate the individuality of this vintage, we suggest enjoying it neat in a tulip glass - after letting it rest for 30 seconds to develop fully. A dash of water may be added to allow the aromas to open up further. The flavors of this Cognac are perfect for enjoyment in the deep of winter - think candlelight, roaring fires and snow falling against the window.

О Prunier Cognac

Steeped in tradition, Cognac Prunier is a family run firm with cellars in the heart of the town of Cognac. The house does not own its own vineyards, instead, they buy the eaux-de-vie directly from supplying vine growers and distillers each year, and then carry out the ageing process in their own cellars.
