It was the widow of a former broker, now deceased, who sold Jean these very old Grande Champagne. Her husband, who was still in business some thirty years ago, had a reputation for tenacity. In this way, he had acquired stocks of cognacs that he bought in his village and the surrounding area and then sold on to merchants. His passion was for old Cognacs, which he accumulated, barrel after barrel, like treasures. He didn't even allow his wife, a schoolteacher, or his children, young and grown, to enter this sanctuary, to which he jealously guarded the key.
It was only in the final stage of his life, destroyed by illness, when his son had to take charge, that those closest to him discovered what he had accumulated over so many years. In a wine storehouse that had once been a barn which he had had thick metal doors fitted, were around fifteen barrels and a few casks. In these barrels, each covered with a black plastic tarpaulin to limit the costly "angels' share" were batches of very old Cognacs from Grande Champagne Cognacs.
