Chinese New Year 2020 Hennessy VSOP Cognac: A Marriage of Tradition and Modernity

A must for any collector has got to be the Hennessy Chinese New Year 2020 Zhang Huan VSOP Cognac. A creative collaboration to celebrate the arrival of the twenty twenty decade, Maison Hennessy have honored the beginning of a new cycle in the Year of the Rat, in their collaboration with contemporary artist, Zhang Huan.

Renowned internationally in the realm of contemporary art, both Hennessy and Zhang Huan found in each other a kindred spirit. Hennessy’s VSOP Cognac is a wonderful addition to any collection. Aged for at least four years in oak casks, but some of the eaux-de-vie within the blend have been aged for far longer.

For both the artist and Hennessy, the design perfectly encapsulates the honoring of one’s heritage through modernity, and seeking to explore new frontiers. Despite eight generations of savoir-faire, Hennessy have always favored a sense of adventure.

In the Nineties, Zhang Huan came into his own as an emerging artist in New York City. Living as a foreigner in the States, his work is permeated with life experience through travel.

“Being abroad gave me a deeper understanding of my tradition, perhaps because I had to see myself from far away,” he says. “I believe that Chinese and Western cultures are meant to integrate with each other, which is why I sought to incorporate a sense of movement in this work. We never know where life may take us, but I do believe that everything that has gone before leads up to the present moment. That is what I want to celebrate in my creations.”

Presentation of the bottle

The VSOP bottle is based on the Hennessy commission created by Zhang Huan. He sought to express joy and celebration of the new cycle, along with a reflective element capturing the essential meditations upon each New Year. He believes that Hennessy’s eaux-de-vie is intended as a ‘natural living expression’ - similar to his art.

The bottle is based on a vibrant dreamscape created on canvas of over five meters long. It is inspired by Hennessy’s library of eaux-de-vie, which the artist reimagines as a metaphor with many mystic layers of meaning.

Looking closer at the bottle, one can see each of the eaux-de-vie coming together as a whole: with icons of red lanterns and grapes. There are many symbols contained within to celebrate the richness of the Chinese New Year - and it is a stunning collector’s item.
