Birius Cognac
The estate of Cognac Birius covers 23 hectares of Petite Champagne vineyards at Biron, in the Charente Maritime. Today the vineyard and cognac house is run by Anne and Philippe Bouyer, direct descendants of the original vineyard owners. Although small in area, Cognac Birius produce a range of cognacs, along with wines, liqueurs and Pineau des Charentes, which they both export and sell directly to the public.

History of Cognac Birius
Cognac Birius has remained in the same family for over 10 generations. Only 20 kilometres from the city of Cognac, the limestone soil of the Petite Champagne has been tended by the family for many decades. Jack Bouyer, the father of today’s cellar master, not only tended the vines and presided over the creation of the eaux-de-vie, but also carved sculptural masterpieces from the chalky rock in the region. In these he immortalized portraits of people important to the region. These can still be seen today in the gardens of the Domaine de Birius.
The skills and passion of the Cognac Birius’s cellar masters has been passed down from father to son, keeping the family secrets close and creating an ever widening range of cognacs, wines and pineaus.
Although small, the delights of the cognac Domaine de Birius have been exported to countries throughout the world for many years, a trend which continues to this day.

Anne and Philippe Bouyer continue to push forward with the sales and exportation of their products. In 1999, they decided to sell directly to the public in addition to their exports, and have expanded into the tourism market. Along with Philippe’s duties as cellar master, Domain de Birius offers a self-catering cottage for tourists and welcomes people for free visits and tastings of their products.
Today, their range of cognacs is produced solely from the Ugni Blanc grape and encompasses blends from VS through to XO.
News, Products and Old Labels
Birius cognacs have been the recipients of many awards over the years. The Carafe XO won the gold medal, “Donjon d’Or”, at the Concours des Eaux de Vie, Pons in 2006. Their VSOP won a gold medal in the Paris 2011 Concours Générale Agricole.
Along with their cognacs, the house also produces Pineau des Charentes, sparkling wines, red and white wines, liqueurs and home-made chocolates.
Another interesting product produced by Cognac Birius is the special cognac created for making Brûlot Charentais. This is to be enjoyed at the end of a meal; the cognac is placed in a saucer with a specially designed cup of coffee then placed on the top. The cognac is set alight, warming the coffee within the cup. Once the alcohol has burned off and the flame extinguished, the contents are poured into the coffee – creating a unique ending to the best of meals.
Alongside the love for cognac, the Bouyers also enjoy other arts. Every summer, no for the fifth time, they invite the public to attend a musical evening at the Domaine de Birius followed by tastings and drinks.
