Château de Beaulon Cognac

The beautiful façade and setting of the Chateau de Beaulon Cognac estate is a fitting setting for producing fine cognac. The chateau itself dates back to the year 1480, with it entering into the hands of the Beaulon family in 1510. The family name remains the same to this day, although it is now run by the very capable Christian Thomas. Chateau de Beaulon Cognac has always been, and continues to be, created purely from the fruits of a single vineyard, and is recognized around the world as being a highly desirable, artisan produced cognac.

History of Chateau de Beaulon Cognac

It was during the reign of Louis XI, in the year 1480, when the family De Vinsons built the Chateau de Beaulon. The regal, gothic style chateau was then purchased in 1510 by the Beaulon family, and it was passed down through various family members over the centuries – some blood relatives and some relatives through marriage.

In the 17th century, the management of the chateau was passed over to the Bishops of Bordeaux. They were delighted to discover a vineyard that produced solely eaux-de-vie for cognac. Using their own expertise they added some different grape varieties to the vineyard, and this became pivotal to the chateau’s production of the Charentais speciality, Pineau des Charentes.

Christian Thomas became the owner of the chateau and its vineyards in 1965, and in 1987 it was declared a historical monument. Along with the building itself, Christian put a lot of time, effort and money into restoring and expanding the vineyards, and true to the tradition of the chateau, cognacs are produced exclusively from the grapes grown on site.

Cognac Chateau de Beaulon Today

Today, Cognac Chateau de Beaulon remains a family run business under the watchful eye of Christian Thomas. All aspects of production, from the grapes grown right through to the finished products, remain faithful to the traditions of the 17th century. The grapes used to create both the cognac and pineau are the Colombard, Folle Blanche and Montils grapes, and the eaux-de-vie is distilled in small copper stills before being aged in either Tronçais or Limousin oak barrels.

The vineyards are strictly organic, both for the sake of the environment and, of course, so as not to have any effect on the purity of taste of the cognac. With careful partnership with exclusive agents in various countries around the globe, Mr Thomas has successfully raised awareness and availability of his cognacs to many of the world’s continents.
