Eye: Pale gold, bright with flashes of amber.

Nose: The nose is rich with a distinguished structure, giving signs of the origins of chalky soil. Aromas of fresh hazelnuts, light florals, almonds, gingerbread and sandalwood.

Palate: Initially woody and caramel-like. By mid-palate, bittersweet flavors of sap, palm oil, resin and under-ripe pears get added to the mix. The aftertaste is medium-long, dry and resiny.

Description

Prunier 20 Years Old Cognac: Good Things Come to Those Who Wait

Age statements are still rare in the world of Cognac, but this excellent release from the House of Prunier displays its age proudly. The Prunier 20 Years Old Cognac is a limited edition, with only about 2,500 bottles produced. All the eaux-de-vie for this blend have been matured in 250-400 liter medium-toasted oak casks, resulting in a quite dry and fresh Cognac, reminiscent of the early 20th-century style.

From the 19th century up until the Second World War, vintages played a significant part in the Cognac trade. In 1986, inspired by their vintages found at auction houses, the House of Prunier looked into reviving this tradition. As the family were in possession of select casks of eaux-de-vie which had been kept in cellars controlled by the Excise Authorities, they were able to prove the age of their Cognacs.

This 20-year-old Cognac is a revival of past traditions, a step further than rough ‘minimum age’ categories like VSOP or XO. Aged in humid cellars by the River Charente, it has reached an exceptional maturity and finesse - proof that nature rewards those who wait.

It’s no surprise that Wine Enthusiast Magazine gave the Prunier 20 Years Old Cognac an impressive 91 points, thanks to its “surprisingly light and fresh” aroma, which is “perfumed with chamomile tea, cedar and honey.”

Presentation of the Bottle

The bottle designed for this 20-year-old Cognac is slim and gently tapered, with a deep punt and a stylish label. It has been created to resemble the bottles used by Prunier in the early 19th century, a throwback to a time of elegance and opulence. The silver-colored gift box features an illustration of La Vieille Maison ('The Old House'), a protected historical landmark in the centre of Cognac that has long been a symbol of the House of Prunier.

How to Enjoy Prunier 20 Years Old Cognac

The complex tasting notes of this Cognac are best showcased in a tulip glass. After pouring, allow the liquor to breathe for 30 seconds to fully concentrate the delicate aromas before you take a sip. An excellent digestif or accompaniment to a cheeseboard.
