Description
Les Ormeaux Lot 72 XO Fins Bois Cognac
Les Ormeaux Lot 72 XO Fins Bois Cognac is a rare and distinctive expression produced by Vignobles Les Ormeaux, a family estate now in its fifth generation. This Cognac originates from the Fins Bois cru, specifically from vineyards located near Pons (17800), an area known for producing fruit-driven and approachable eaux-de-vie. Distilled from 100% Ugni Blanc grapes, this spirit reflects both the terroir and the traditional methods preserved by the estate.
Although labeled as an XO Cognac, this bottling goes far beyond the minimum requirements of the category. It is sourced from a single lot, believed to have been distilled in 1972, making it approximately 53 years old. Unlike most commercial blends, this Cognac remains entirely unblended, coming from a single harvest and a single batch. No additives such as sugar or coloring have been used, ensuring a pure and unaltered expression of the spirit.
The production process takes place entirely on the estate. The wine is distilled on-site and the Cognac is aged in oak casks for several decades before being hand-bottled. This level of control allows the producer to maintain consistency and preserve the original character of the eau-de-vie. The long maturation has resulted in a spirit that is both mature and accessible, offering depth without heaviness.
On the nose, this Cognac immediately reveals its age. The aromatic profile is centered around dark orange notes, reminiscent of candied citrus and orange confectionery. These fruit-driven aromas are complemented by subtle spice and a clear hint of dark chocolate. A brief impression of fresh cedar wood appears, adding complexity before fading back into the dominant citrus character.
The palate is smooth and well-balanced, with a texture that is easy to approach. The fruit notes carry through, presenting flavors similar to sweet clementine candies. A layer of vanilla develops gradually, adding softness and roundness to the profile. The oak influence is well integrated, contributing structure without introducing bitterness or dryness. The absence of tannic grip makes this Cognac particularly easy to drink despite its age.
This expression demonstrates the potential of Fins Bois when given sufficient time to mature. While often considered a cru for younger Cognacs, extended aging reveals a more refined and complex side. The result is a Cognac that combines fruit intensity with maturity, offering a balanced and consistent experience from start to finish.
Presentation of the bottle
The Cognac is presented in two distinct formats. This 70cl version comes in a square-shaped decanter-style bottle, giving it a structured and solid appearance. The glass is thick and clear, allowing the deep amber color of the spirit to stand out. The label design is simple and traditional, focusing on essential information without unnecessary decoration. The 50cl version is bottled in a straight, more classic shape, offering a more understated presentation. Both formats reflect a practical and honest approach, consistent with the estate’s philosophy.
How to drink
This Cognac is best enjoyed neat at room temperature to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and smooth texture. Allowing the spirit to rest in the glass for a few minutes will help open up the citrus and chocolate notes. A tulip-shaped glass is recommended to concentrate the aromas. For those who prefer a slightly lighter profile, adding a small drop of water can gently enhance the fruit character without diminishing the structure. This Cognac is suitable for both quiet tasting moments and sharing among enthusiasts interested in long-aged, single lot expressions.

Les Ormeaux XO (Lot 72)
Very nice and sincere Fins Bois Cognac here - and really a crazy age for the simple "XO" on the label. Really, not all XOs can be treated the same. Beautiful mature nose - absolutely zero mistaking this for a young Cognac. Spices, orange-y somewhat earthy fruits more on the candied side of the...
Really love this 53 year old Fins Bois
Honestly this is a great, old value-for-money Cognac. The nose is rich, the body is very balanced. It is 40% so do not expect crazy intense character, if you're looking for a balanced single-cask single vintage Cognac, that is really pretty old, here you go.
