Eye: golden color with old gold reflections.

Nose: complex aromas of roasted pineapple, salted butter caramel, heated oak, peach, and saffron.

Palate: depth and complexity add to the overall flavor profile. The palate is rich, round, and well-balanced with notes of grapes macerated in rum, ripe fruits, and fresher pastry notes.

Finish: long and offers a beautiful tension between the fruity notes and the subtle hint of the sandy terroir.

Description

Grosperrin 18 years Bois Ordinaires de l'Ile d'Oléron Cognac

The Grosperrin 18 years Bois Ordinaires de l'Ile d'Oléron Cognac is a rare Cognac from the island of Oléron. It is aged for over 18 years and comes from a small property located in Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron. It is 30 times rarer than a Grande Champagne of the same age.

The sandy terroir from the Ile d'Oléron benefits from the influence of the Gulf Stream and has Mediterranean-like sunshine. The island is known as "the island of herbs" due to its unique plants such as mimosa and tamaris. The current owner has retired and the last harvest was in 2007, with only 3 previous harvests remaining. Each year, Grosperrin buys one year by tacit contract to continue the aging process in their cellars, where a light reduction is made before it is put into barrels.

This particular Cognac is a new batch which was bottled in 2024 and harvested in 2004. It is said that this batch is just as good as the previous one from the 2003 harvest, if not even better.

Presentation of the bottle

About Grosperrin Cognac

The independent Cognac house of Grosperrin is a relatively new one in the region, having only been established in 1999 by its founder, Jean Grosperrin. Grosperrin is based in Saintes which sits between the terroirs of Fins Bois and Borderies and it is today run by Jean’s son, Guilhelm, who took over in 2004 at just 23 years old.

Guilhelm’s mission is to discover producers all across the region in order to create truly unique Cognacs from the six crus. This vision was made possible by the fantastic relationships Jean Grosperrin built with producers, and that Guilhelm has since built on and expanded. Today, Grosperrin works with over 150 Cognac producers, from which Guilhelm will meticulously select barrels to craft into exquisite end bottles.
