Description
Conte et Filles 2010 Fins Bois Brut de Fût Cognac
The Conte et Filles 2010 Fins Bois Brut de Fût Cognac is a single-cask bottling drawn from cask no. 71, presented at natural strength and free of filtration, color additives, or blending. This release highlights the character of the 2010 vintage, a year that marked the final season during which the previous generation of the family managed the estate. The Cognac comes exclusively from the vineyards of Saint-Aulais-la-Chapelle, situated within the Fins Bois area, a zone known for producing approachable yet expressive eaux-de-vie with fruit-driven profiles and notable freshness.
This single cask was selected in collaboration with Sachiko Noda, a Japanese sommelier recognized for her refined aromatic sensitivity and her work introducing Cognac to Japanese enthusiasts. Her selection emphasizes finesse, clarity, and purity of expression. According to the producers, the cask reveals aromas reminiscent of Darjeeling tea and subtle roasted notes, two markers that illustrate the individuality of this specific barrel. These characteristics align well with the mineral and lightly structured nature often found in Fins Bois eaux-de-vie aged in older, gently extractive barrels.
The Cognac is drawn from a “fût roux,” meaning a used cask that has already contributed its strongest tannic impact in earlier aging cycles. Such barrels allow the distillate to mature gradually while preserving fruit brightness and fine-textured aromas. The result is a Cognac that remains clear and direct, with a profile shaped more by time than by tannin influence. Because no blending is involved, the final spirit reflects the particular path of its individual cask—its rate of evaporation, its interaction with wood, and its response to the humidity of the cellar.
On the nose, the 2010 vintage from Conte et Filles displays mature fruit such as dried apricot and baked pear. Alongside those elements develop light citrus tones and a soft, grounded mineral note tied to the Fins Bois terroir. A gentle roasted character appears gradually, echoing tea leaf and light toast. The aroma profile remains clean, layered, and steady, never heavy or overly sweet.
The palate introduces these same notes in a rounded and steady manner. The texture is smooth yet firm, shaped by natural cask strength rather than dilution. The fruit notes persist, joined by soft vanilla, roasted nut nuances, and a delicate wood presence. Throughout the tasting, a line of mineral freshness gives structure and ensures balance. The Cognac’s natural strength amplifies flavor without creating heat, maintaining clarity from start to finish.
The finish is moderately long, leaning toward dryness rather than sweetness. A gentle echo of fruit remains, combined with a clean mineral impression and subtle wood. The profile is straightforward and sincere, inviting slow tasting for those who appreciate unblended, unaltered Cognac.
Presentation of the bottle
The bottle has a distinctive rounded silhouette with a wide, generous body and a stable glass base. The shoulders gradually rise toward a narrow neck topped with a natural wooden stopper. This closure adds a simple, understated look that fits the style of a single-cask bottling. The label is wrapped around the lower half of the bottle and features botanical illustrations in fine linework, including grape clusters and foliage. The central diamond-shaped panel clearly displays the natural strength of 46.2%. The layout is straightforward, uncluttered, and easy to read. The amber color of the Cognac contrasts attractively with the pale label, making the bottle visually striking without being ornate.
How to drink
This Cognac is best enjoyed neat in a tulip glass, where its naturally layered aroma can open gradually. Allowing the spirit a few minutes of rest in the glass will reveal its roasted elements and delicate mineral notes. A small drop of water may be used to widen the aromatic profile for those sensitive to cask-strength bottlings. The 2010 Fins Bois Brut de Fût is also suited for slow, contemplative tasting at the end of a meal. For food pairing, it works well with dishes that highlight subtle textures and clean flavors, but it is equally rewarding on its own, allowing the purity of the single cask to take center stage.
