The Ferrand 1840 Original Formula 2024 is a tribute to the classic Cognac style favored by 19th-century bartenders when Cognac was the go-to spirit for cocktails. Inspired by the tasting of a rare 1840s bottle, this blend recreates historical production techniques to deliver a rich and concentrated profile, perfectly suited for mixology in the tradition of legendary bartenders like Jerry Thomas, Harry Johnson, and Leo Engel.
The nose is fresh and fruit-forward, with grape, apple, pineapple, pear, and white peach taking center stage, followed by a touch of star anise. It shares some characteristics with Highland single malts, offering subtle cocoa bean and green coffee notes. On the palate, it is vibrant and precise, balancing vanilla, medicinal candy, and floral nuances with a refreshing burst of candied citrus and a distinctive mineral note. The long and structured finish leaves an impression of dark chocolate, licorice, candied lemon, and pear, with hints of almond and fresh walnut adding complexity.
The Ferrand 1840 Original Formula Cognac is presented in an elegant, vintage-style bottle that pays homage to the 19th-century era. The embossed "F" emblem on the glass adds a distinguished touch, while the intricate white and gold label, adorned with classical motifs, evokes a sense of history. The natural cork stopper enhances its authentic character, making it both a collector’s piece and a bartender’s essential.
This Cognac is crafted with cocktails in mind, making it ideal for classics like the Sidecar, Sazerac, or Brandy Crusta. It can also be enjoyed neat to appreciate its historical depth and layered complexity. Whether mixed or sipped, the Ferrand 1840 Original Formula brings a unique historical authenticity to any drinking experience.
Nose: Vanilla, Lemon, peach, apple, pineapple, brown sugar. Floral. Very youthful. Not much oak influence at all. Palate: Vanilla custard, Lemon, Apple Finish: Long citrus finish. Not an overly complex cognac, but it is still an enjoyable pour. Proof is not as evident as I thought it would...
