Eye: Antique amber.

Nose: Powerful aromas of licorice and damp undergrowth.

Palate: Woody, rich and multifaceted. A sweetness reminiscent of anise leads into a long finish with gentle tannins. This is an excellent introduction to the quality of vintage Cognac.

Description

Rémy Couillebaud Millésime 1995 Vintage Cognac: a Balance of Nature and Nurture

Representing the first year when the House of Rémy Couillebaud decided to start producing vintage Cognac, the Rémy Couillebaud Millésime 1995 Cognac combines all the qualities of a great harvest year with the know-how of an independent, family-run producer. Crafted exclusively of eaux-de-vie made from grapes grown in the Fins Bois, this vintage expression has spent a significant time waiting to be released. Typical of the region, it’s round and supple with a great finesse that has developed over the years in French oak barrels. 1995 was a year of celebration for wine and Cognac producers, bringing a great harvest after a few years of disappointing rainy weather. Overall, it was a year for top-notch vintage releases - and this bottle is certainly one to look out for.

The vineyards of Rémy Couillebaud date back to the latter part of the 19th Century, and it was during this time - in 1867 - when the family also acquired their first still. In this way, their knowledge of grape production is thoroughly intertwined with their knowledge of distillation, balancing the two for generations. In 1969, the house took the rather brave step of selling their wares directly to customers, as opposed to dealers or other Cognac houses. In this way, they could retain control and maintain close relationships with the end consumers, a quality overlooked by many businesses.

Today, Cognac Rémy Couillebaud is still in the hands of the founding family, run by a sixth-generation distiller. Direct sales continue to make up a large proportion of revenue, and in 1995 the house decided to start producing vintage Cognac as well as the more popular blends.

Presentation of the Bottle

Like most releases from Rémy Couillebaud, the 1995 vintage comes in a classic, slim bottle with a thin neck and simple label. The wood cork emphasizes the ‘vintage’ look of the packaging, while a dark presentation box gives a luxury feel. This would be a great gift for any Cognac connoisseur or anyone with a 1995 birthday or anniversary.

How to Enjoy Rémy Couillebaud Millésime 1995 Vintage Cognac

Pour this rare vintage into a tulip glass and let it rest for 30 seconds before taking a sip. Optionally, a small dash of mineral water could be added to open up the aromas further.
