Prunier Vintage 1976 Fins Bois Limited Edition Cognac
Prunier Vintage 1976 Fins Bois Limited Edition Cognac is a rare single-vintage Cognac produced by Maison Prunier, one of the oldest independent Cognac houses in France. Distilled from 100% Ugni Blanc grapes harvested during the exceptionally hot and dry 1976 growing season, this release offers a detailed snapshot of a remarkable year in the Cognac region. Bottled at its natural strength of 59.4% ABV, it remains unfiltered and undiluted, preserving the character that developed during decades of maturation.
This limited edition was created from two eaux-de-vie originating exclusively from the Fins Bois cru. Approximately 15% of the blend comes from vineyards in Chermignac, while the remaining 85% originates from Vaux-Rouillac. The two components were harvested and distilled in 1976 before beginning their long maturation in old oak casks. In 2025, a portion was transferred to glass demijohns while the remainder continued ageing in small 110-litre oak casks before the final assembly. Only 90 bottles were produced, making this one of the most exclusive releases from Maison Prunier.
The 1976 vintage is well remembered across France for its prolonged summer drought and unusually high temperatures. Limited rainfall and significant water stress reduced grape yields, resulting in smaller berries with concentrated flavours. These climatic conditions contributed to the structure and intensity found in this Cognac. Decades of slow maturation have transformed the original eau-de-vie into a spirit with notable depth while maintaining the lively character associated with the Fins Bois cru.
On the nose, the Cognac opens with an elegant rancio profile. Aromas of walnut, hazelnut and almond emerge first, followed by orange zest, dried citrus peel and gentle spice notes. With time in the glass, hints of toffee, old oak and subtle confectionery nuances become more apparent. The aromatic profile is expressive yet focused, revealing new layers with each pass.
The palate is rich and concentrated, immediately displaying the benefits of its natural cask strength bottling. A natural sweetness supports flavours of dried fruits, toasted nuts and liquorice. The oak influence is present but carefully integrated, bringing delicate vanilla accents rather than dominating the spirit. The tannins are firm yet polished, creating structure and length without excessive dryness. The combination of mature rancio notes, fruit concentration and controlled oak ageing gives the Cognac a balanced and distinctive personality.
Fins Bois Cognacs are often appreciated for their approachable fruit-forward style, but extended ageing can reveal remarkable complexity. This 1976 vintage demonstrates how the cru can evolve over many decades while retaining freshness and vibrancy. The result is a Cognac that combines mature characteristics with energy and precision.
Maison Prunier has been established in Cognac since 1769 and remains family-owned. Since the mid-1990s, the house has become particularly known among enthusiasts for bottling individual vintage Cognacs at their natural alcohol strength. These releases allow collectors and connoisseurs to experience Cognacs with minimal intervention, preserving the original identity of each barrel and vintage. The Vintage 1976 Fins Bois follows this philosophy and offers a direct expression of both terroir and time.
Presentation of the bottle
The presentation reflects the exclusive nature of this release. The Cognac is housed in a tall, ribbed glass bottle with a distinctive sculpted shape that catches and reflects light through the deep amber spirit. The front label features an elegant cream-coloured design with gold detailing, prominently displaying the 1976 vintage and Fins Bois designation. A natural cork closure is secured beneath a gold-toned mechanical stopper, while a pink neck wrap provides a subtle contrast to the warm tones of the bottle.
The bottle is presented in a premium wooden display case. The exterior combines natural wood with a striking orange front panel carrying the Prunier branding and vintage designation. Inside, the presentation case opens to reveal the bottle alongside a detailed map of the Cognac region, highlighting the various crus and reinforcing the connection to the Fins Bois origin. The combination of wood, orange accents and detailed finishing creates a presentation that is both contemporary and respectful of traditional Cognac packaging.
How to drink
Prunier Vintage 1976 Fins Bois Limited Edition Cognac is best enjoyed neat in a tulip-shaped tasting glass. Allowing the Cognac to rest in the glass for several minutes helps reveal its full aromatic complexity. Due to its natural strength of 59.4% ABV, a few drops of water may be added to explore additional layers of fruit, spice and rancio notes.
This Cognac is particularly suited to slow tasting sessions where its evolution can be followed over time. It pairs well with roasted nuts, dark chocolate or can simply be enjoyed on its own after a meal. Serving at room temperature will provide the most complete tasting experience and allow the long finish to fully develop.
