Color: Deep amber with copper-red glints, showing its long maturation.

Nose: On the nose, brilliant and refined: bursts of tangerine, apricot and fresh orange peel, followed by mirabelles and a subtle mint-eucalyptus freshness. There is a fine floral touch (jasmine, rose petals) and delicate camphor-leather hints, under-lined by light polished-wood and vintage wax tones.

Palate: The palate opens with citrus zest and marmalade (orange, grapefruit), moving into juicy apricot and passion fruit. White pepper, chalky dryness and refined herbal undertones (vetiver, mint oil) add structure. The oak influence is very well-integrated, with elegance rather than dominance.

Finish: Long and polished, with eucalyptus and camphor retreating into orange peel, mild tannin and a dry, lingering rustic nuance of leather and age-mellowed oak. Balanced and mature, yet lively.

Description

Mauxion Petite Champagne 1958

Introducing the Mauxion Petite Champagne 1958, a rare vintage from a multi-generation producer based in Sainte-Lheurine (17520). This eau-de-vie, distilled “sur lies” in a traditional Charentais still and aged without any blending or cross-cutting, stands as a pure expression of the Petite Champagne cru at 51% ABV and presented in 70 cl format.

The estate’s two original barrels remain in situ to this day, stored in a humid earth-floor cellar which has nurtured the Cognac’s slow maturation for decades. The result is a spirit that reveals all the hallmarks of an exceptional old Petite Champagne: precision, depth, and beautifully matured complexity.

On the nose, the fruit is vibrant even after many years — citrus and orchard notes, fresh and poised rather than simply oxidative. The palate delivers both richness and finesse: marmalade, apricot and refined wood, all balanced by subtle herbal and mineral touches. The finish lingers, articulate and assured, a reminder of the quality of the terroir and the patience of its custodians.

Presentation of the bottle

The Mauxion Petite Champagne 1958 Cognac is presented in an elegant and classic bottle that reflects the prestige of its age and origin. The clear glass reveals a deep amber spirit with copper and mahogany glints, allowing the color itself to testify to decades of maturation. The label, crafted in gold tones with refined typography, displays the words “Cognac Mauxion Sélection Petite Champagne 1958” with a numbered edition mark, underlining the rarity of this very limited release.

The neck of the bottle is sealed with golden wax, complemented by a fine metallic medallion embossed with the Mauxion insignia, tied elegantly around the neck with gold thread. This finishing touch adds a sense of authenticity and tradition, consistent with the house’s reputation for family-crafted excellence.

The bottle is housed in a solid wooden presentation case of dark oak tone, fitted with a polished metal plaque engraved with the Mauxion name and the phrase “Very Limited Edition.” The contrast between the warm natural wood and the gold detailing enhances the impression of timeless refinement. Together, the packaging and bottle create an image of understated luxury, perfectly suited to the exceptional Cognac it contains.

How to drink

This vintage is destined for the connoisseur who seeks a Cognac of character and provenance. It is equally suited for a quiet contemplative moment or to anchor a fine spirits collection. Serve it in a tulip or snifter glass, at room temperature, and allow its layers to unfold gently. A unique opportunity to savour a nearly heritage-level Cognac from the heart of Petite Champagne.

About Mauxion Selection Cognac

The origin of the Mauxion family dates back to 1575 when Pierre Mauxion was born in the village of Houlette. Today the estate is still home to the Mauxion family after thirteen generations. Antoine Mauxion was the first of the family to produce eaux-de-vie, back in 1743, and since then ten generations have followed in his footsteps. Today the house of Mauxion Selection continues to embrace original traditions with regards to caring for the vineyard and producing high class, quality eaux-de-vie.

Uniquely, Mauxion Selection offers a range of single cru expressions, available a range of sizes. All cognacs produced by Mauxion Selection come from the 6 prestigious terroirs of Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, Fins Bois, Bons Bois and Bois Ordinaires. To preserve the flavor of their eaux-de-vie, Mauxion Selection Cognac is bottled at cask strength without any blending or reduction; allowing the eaux-de-vie to develop with exceptional complexity and depth. Whilst the attentive selection process may mean that quantity is limited, it ensures a Cognac of unrivalled quality, every time.
