Description

Martell Centenary 1921 Special Edition Cognac

Representing one of the finest eaux-de-vie ever released from the Martell cellars, the Martell Centenary 1921 Special Edition Cognac has been born of the prestigious Grande Champagne terroir and its famous chalk and limestone soils. Harvested and distilled in 1921, the cask which contained this ancient eau-de-vie was moved to the Jean Martell cellar in 1956, a location reserved for the oldest and most exquisite Cognacs in their collection. Upon being tasted in 1987, the Cognac was judged to have attained perfection and was transferred from oak barrels to glass demijohns where it remained until it was finally bottled in 2021, a full century after it was distilled. Only 70 bottles have been released, making it an exclusive rarity. In the words of Cellar Master Christophe Valtaud: “I wish the greatest pleasure to the Cognac connoisseurs who will have the chance to taste this 100-year-old Cognac with their loved ones. It is a rare moment of sharing.”

The oldest of the great Cognac houses, the House of Martell celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2015. The history of Martell Cognac dates back to 1715, when Jean Martell, a young merchant from Jersey, founded his own trading business at Gatebourse in Cognac. Here on the banks of the River Charente his grand house still stands today, a worldwide Cognac icon that continues to innovate and evolve with the times.

Presentation of the Bottle

The Martell Centenary 1921 comes in a Baccarat crystal carafe that has been hand-blown by Baccarat’s master craftsmen. Featuring unique engravings on the side and base, the decanter is also topped with a crystal stopper decored with hand-painted gold details. The motif of intertwined vine leaves and shoots adorning the crystal has been inspired by Maison Martell’s legendary terroir, and the same motif features on the hand-crafted marquetry wooden box in which the Cognac is encased. Each decanter is individually numbered on a golden medallion.

About Martell Cognac

Martell is the oldest of the Big Four Cognac houses. Similar to Rémy Martin, but a few years older still, not long ago did Martell celebrate its 300-year anniversary. The history of Martell & Co dates back to 1715 when Jean Martell founded the company with the wish to produce only the highest quality in Cognac. With the legendary bottles Martell Cordon Bleu, the cuvée Martell Extra L’Or de Jean Martell and the recent Création Grand Extra from 2007, the company strongly implanted itself in the luxury goods market, and are famous for using large amounts of eaux-de-vie from the Borderies terroir. It belongs to Pernod Ricard and has sales of around 15 million liters every year. The most precious eaux-de-vie, some of which date back to 1830, are stored in a secret location in the cellars of Jean Martell - approximately 1.6 million 9-liter cases!
