The Summer that Never Ends: Hine Millésime 1986 Early Landed Cognac

For each exceptional year, Hine sets aside casks to be matured as vintages, such as this Hine Millésime 1986 Early Landed Cognac. ‘Early Landed’ indicates that the casks were sent to be stored in bonded cellars in Bristol, UK, where the cold, humid environment allows the contents within to age with a unique quality. After an extended period of maturation, they are then shipped back to Hine for bottling.

For decades, vintage expressions have allowed the House of Hine to create ‘liquid snapshots’ of their most exceptional harvests. Not every year will become a vintage bottling, as the natural conditions have to be just right to create a unique character to stand out against the rest. To add an extra dimension of flavor, the Early Landed vintages are taken out of France. This cross-channel experiment gives the casks a distinctly different profile to their Jarnac-aged counterparts: while the Jarnac-aged 1986 vintage displays orchard fruit with structured oak notes, this Early Landed bottling is all about soft vanilla and florals.

The history of Hine Cognac starts in the late 18th Century when a young man by the name of Thomas Hine from Dorset arrived in Jarnac to undertake administerial work for a Cognac producer. After falling in love with the proprietor’s daughter Françoise-Elisabeth, he married into the family and took on a more senior role in the company. For years he used his financial skills to make major changes and develop their trade, eventually changing the company name to Thomas Hine & Co. in 1817.

Overseeing 115 hectares of land by the village of Bonneuil, Hine Cognac focuses entirely on the growing areas of Grande and Petite Champagne. Across these limestone hills, vines of Ugni Blanc grapes can draw nutrients and water from of a depth of over 20 metres, allowing them to flourish even during the most extreme conditions. It is this terroir of Grande Champagne that allows Bernard Hine, the sixth generation running the Hine family business, to select the most unusual vintages to either be aged in France or England. Just like the other bottlings of Early Landed vintages, this 1984 Cognac shows how the House of Hine honor their founder, and their connection to England, over 200 years after Thomas Hine left his homeland.

Presentation of the Bottle

The Hine Millésime 1986 Early Landed Cognac is presented in a sleek, tall bottle with the Hine medallion stamped on the neck. The elegant box features the vintage prominently displayed on the front.

How to Enjoy Hine Millésime 1986 Early Landed Cognac

Pour into a tulip glass and let rest for 30 seconds before taking a sip. Don’t rush; this lingering, laid-back Cognac is perfect for a summer evening when the day seems sweet and endless.

About Hine Cognac

Located in the heart of the Grande Champagne, the premium wine growing area of the Cognac region, the house of Hine has been producing some of the most exquisite Cognacs for six generations, when it was better known as T Hine & Co Cognac. The estate boasts an exceptional 173 acres of vineyards, and the house has a very special tradition of producing relatively small quantities - but with a very high standard in quality. One of their trademarks is to store their vintage casks in damp cellars in Bristol, England. This way, the Thomas Hine Cognac goes through a uniquely different ageing process due to the humidity of the seaside town, which differs somewhat to that of the southwestern coast of France. These highly priced vintage bottles are called “Hine Early-Landed Vintage Cognac”.
