This 1989 vintage was sold to Grosperrin by a distillery in Chateauneuf-sur-Charente, which acted as the intermediary with the winegrower. In reality the lot comes from an estate several kilometres away in Brie-sous-Matha, a village at the heart of one of the finest landscapes of the Saintonge vineyard, on clay-limestone soils. The grower had kept his harvests from the late 1980s and early 1990s because of the economic crisis that hit the region hard from 1992: sales had collapsed and many growers were obliged to hold back their preceding vintages for want of buyers. This lot was bottled in February 2024.
Old-gold robe. The nose is characteristic of the Fins Bois, with slightly sweet, fruity notes of ripe mango and cooked pineapple, underpinned by an agreeable salinity that points to a terroir more mineral than clay. There is real length and fine balance here. The attack is supple, almost discreet, then quickly gains amplitude; the palate is as generous as the nose, the fruit extended by spicy notes that mark the 31 years spent ageing in cask. The finish is velvety and highly perfumed, and invites a second glass. An accessible cognac for lovers of traditional Fins Bois.

The independent Cognac house of Grosperrin is a relatively new one in the region, having only been established in 1999 by its founder, Jean Grosperrin. Grosperrin is based in Saintes which sits between the terroirs of Fins Bois and Borderies and it is today run by Jean’s son, Guilhem, who took over in 2004 at just 23 years old.
Guilhem’s mission is to discover producers all across the region in order to create truly unique Cognacs from the six crus. This vision was made possible by the fantastic relationships Jean Grosperrin built with producers, and that Guilhem has since built on and expanded. Today, Grosperrin works with over 150 Cognac producers, from which Guilhem will meticulously select barrels to craft into exquisite end bottles.
