Description
A Ray of Sunshine After the Rain: a 1972 Vintage from Baron Otard
The Baron Otard 1972 Petite Champagne Vintage Cognac is a limited edition of only 2500 bottles. This vintage expression is an unblended, single eau-de-vie from grapes harvested in Petite Champagne. A balanced maturation process between dry and humid cellars has released an array of well-developed aromas and flavors, while the classic Petite Champagne character gives lightness and finesse to the final product. The year of 1972 was marked by a cold and wet spring, causing a late-flowering vine, followed by a hot summer season and a healthy maturation period for the grapes. The resulting high acidity levels created the perfect conditions for distilling quality eaux-de-vie.
The house of Baron Otard Cognac dates back to 1795, when Jean-Baptise Antoine Otard, grandson of the Scottish Baron James Otard, returned from to France from a period of exile in England during the French Revolution. Coming from a family of winemakers, Jean-Baptiste was passionate about eau-de-vie and reputedly developed his own Cognac during this period. After returning to his hometown, he was able to purchase the Royal Chateau in Cognac at auction, saving the historic landmark from demolition. Here, behind dense stone walls and with a humid microclimate provided by the River Charente, Jean-Baptise launched his own Cognac company, then known as Maison Otard. Today the Chateau is a tourist attraction and houses a vast collection of casks containing the eaux-de-vie which will become Baron Otard Cognac.
Presentation of the Bottle
The Baron Otard 1972 vintage comes in a tall, slim bottle with a deep punt and silver foiling on the neck. The presentation box is equally elegant, finished with silver and copper details.
How to Enjoy
The multifaceted flavors of this single vintage expression are best appreciated in a classic tulip glass. To let the aromas develop fully, leave the spirit to rest in the glass for 30 seconds before imbibing.
About Otard Cognac
With an ancient tradition tracing back to the Middle Ages, and to the great Norwegian Viking Ottar, this Cognac dynasty has an incredibly unique history. Around the same period, the iconic Chateau de Cognac was built on the banks of the Charente, and was largely associated with the French monarchy. Eventually, the two histories would merge with the arrival of the Cognac Maison Otard, founded in 1795. Today, the Chateau is the home of Baron Otard Cognac, who are amongst the most recognized in quality. The elegant teardrop bottles are a beautiful symbol for the simultaneously traditional and modern values of Cognac Otard.
