Specializing in single-year vintages, this English-French Cognac house outdoes itself once again with the stunning HINE 1981 Early Landed Vintage Cognac. Selecting only the finest grapes grown in premium vineyards of the “Premier Cru”, HINE distilled them in 1981 to then transfer them to his hidden chalk cellars in the village of Wickwar near Bristol.
Shipped in French oak casks, HINE has taken what makes the Grande Champagne truly special and has given it a unique twist. The unique geological makeup of this terroir in southwest France has its maritime climate to thank for its exceptional eaux-de-vie. That combined with the unique maritime dampness of the cellars in southwest England has resulted in one of the finest Millésime Cognacs in the Cognac sphere.
The change in climate and humidity gives it impeccable balance, and slows down the aging process considerably more than in France.
The climate of the year of a Vintage Cognac is also an important part of its narrative. The year 1981 saw late spring frosts, a rainy summer, and a frost during harvest. Despite all of that, the Cognac developed a harmonious and fruity character.
Bristol has been an important port in the trade of wine and spirits since the Middle Ages, and HINE took a particular interest in shipping casks of Cognac to Britain at the beginning of the 19th century. He selected some casks to be shipped in deep, humid cellars - this selection came to be known as the ‘Early Landed” Cognacs.

The aesthetics of the Early Landed Cognacs are eternally stylish. The bottle is tall with a medium sized punt at the bottom, a coppery royal seal and a simple cream label with red lettering. The presentation box makes it the perfect gift.
Located in the heart of the Grande Champagne, the premium wine growing area of the Cognac region, the house of Hine has been producing some of the most exquisite Cognacs for six generations, when it was better known as T Hine & Co Cognac. The estate boasts an exceptional 173 acres of vineyards, and the house has a very special tradition of producing relatively small quantities - but with a very high standard in quality. One of their trademarks is to store their vintage casks in damp cellars in Bristol, England. This way, the Thomas Hine Cognac goes through a uniquely different ageing process due to the humidity of the seaside town, which differs somewhat to that of the southwestern coast of France. These highly priced vintage bottles are called “Hine Early-Landed Vintage Cognac”.
