The Cognac

Currently distilled and matured under the guidance of Christophe Fillioux, Rome de Bellegarde Cognac uses only Ugni Blanc grapes from the Grande Champagne growing region for their Cognacs. While the core process of making cognac still follows the same long-held tradition of harvesting the grape, fermentation and distillation, it is the soil of the region and the process of making that Cognac that sets it apart. 

From the beginning, this company decided to dive straight into the world of luxury spirits, releasing such masterpieces as the 1894 L’Eveil des Sens, a truly superb Cognac made of only four eaux-de-vie, all aged over 70 years. With only 67 bottles ever created, it became one of the most unique blends of its kind available globally. Whilst a historically important Cognac from one of the rarest and oldest cuvees available, 1894 L’Eveil des Sens was also recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most expensive shot (40ml measure) ever purchased, at the eye-watering value of £10,014.

The History

The Bellegarde family trace their roots back to Roger de Saint-Lary de Bellegarde, an employee of King Henry II who lost favor when he supported the Huguenot rebels. After being pardoned, the Bellegarde family was appointed territories overseas - notably in Haiti - and sometime around 1725, they became involved in Cognac production. As a wealthy family on the island, many of their bloodlines made it into the history books, including General Jean-Louis Bellegarde, who worked as Governor of Port au Prince, and Dantes Bellegarde who was awarded the Legion d’Honneur for his contribution to Haitian independence. Dantes was a passionate advocate of peace and diplomacy, values which are particularly treasured by his descendants today. 

In 2016, entrepreneurs David R. Bellegarde and Dimitri Nalin joined forces with members of their family to revive their family’s Cognac history and craftsmanship. Equally keen to carry on their family’s history of advocating for social justice, they work to make a lasting contribution to the world and towards the betterment of humanity. Rome De Bellegarde is currently involved in helping to reduce malnutrition, reduce gender inequality, creating more employment and educational programs for minorities in developed countries, as well as participating in wilderness preservation and the reduction of human impact on the environment.
