Description
Jules Gautret Extra Old Pineau
Jules Gautret Extra Old Pineau (‘Extra Vieux’) is a fortified sweet white wine that has been aged for five years in Limousin oak barrels. Traditional Pineau des Charentes is made by mixing lightly fermented grape must with Cognac eaux-de-vie and this blend is then matured in oak casks in order to extract tannins - the same way that Cognac is produced. Only Pineau that has been matured in oak casks for over ten years can be labelled with the ‘Extra Vieux’ classification; at this age, expect an abundance of aromas and flavors, beautifully integrated by the years spent in oak. The result here is an intense concentration of sun-ripened fruits combined with the richness of the Cognac terroir, creating an omnipresent but mellow rancio aroma as well as volume and length to the rich palate.
Jules Gautret was born to a family of winegrowers who had been settled in Jonzac in the Petite Champagne region since around 1780. In 1818, this affluent family purchased the Chateau de Jonzac, establishing them as a tour de force in the region. Jules established his own néogicant company in 1847 and set up cellars as well as a distillery 30 kilometres south of Cognac. The Maison has stayed in the family ever since, and expanded considerably in 2007 with new cellars and a bottling plant to handle the increasing amounts of Pineau and Cognac they are producing.
Presentation of the Bottle
The decanter is heavy and substantial, with a wide profile and natural wood stopper. The label has been done in a 19th Century style, decorated with fine calligraphy writing on a cream background. Of course, a matching presentation box completes the package, making this a great gift.
How to Enjoy Jules Gautret Extra Old Pineau
Like most Pineau de Charentes, this is best served chilled (8-10°C) as an aperitif or slightly warmer as a digestif. Serve in tulip glasses alongside hors d'oeuvres, after dinner with a cheeseboard, or simply on its own. Sublime.
