Youthful With a Royal Presence: Baron Otard VS
Young and exuberant, the Baron Otard VS Cognac is a blend using eaux-de-vie from the first four appellations. While Grande Champagne gives a powerful structure and mineral content, Petite Champagne brings vigour, Borderies a sweet floral note and Fins Bois an abundance of orchard fruits. The minimum age in the blend is three years, with the first six months spent in new barrels to allow the wood to express all its flavor. The Limousin oak chosen for these casks is famous for its rich vanilla notes, which clearly comes through on the nose of this VS Cognac.
The history of Baron Otard Cognac dates back to 1795, when Jean-Baptise Antoine Otard, grandson of the Scottish Baron James Otard, had returned from to France from his exile in England. Jean-Baptise came from a family of winemakers, and was rumored to have developed his own Cognac in exile which he took with him to his hometown in France. Upon his return, he was able to purchase the Royal Chateau in Cognac at auction, saving it from demolition. Here, behind dense stone walls and with a humid microclimate provided by the River Charente, Jean-Baptise launched his own Cognac company, then known as Maison Otard. Today the Chateau is a tourist attraction, but still houses the casks of eau-de-vie which will become Baron Otard Cognac.
Presentation of the Bottle

How to Enjoy Baron Otard VS Cognac
This exuberant VS Cognac is ideal to drink on the rocks, or used in cocktails and aperitifs. Try it with tonic or with a splash of soda - or use it to mix up a Royal Spritz:
- 25ml Baron Otard VS
- 15ml Elderflower Liqueur
- 10ml Lemon juice
- Sparkling wine
- Lemon twist and mint to garnish
Pour the first three ingredients in a large wine glass, fill with ice and top with sparkling wine. Garnish with a lemon twist and a mint sprig. Cheers!
Yes, I have open the package and tasted the cognac. The cognac was everything that I expected. Even my family and friends enjoyed the cognac during the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. I would recommend anyone to shop with Cognac Expert.
Impressing blend of younger Cognacs
I personally visited the house of "Chateau de Cognac" (owned by Bacardi), the producer behind Otard Cognacs. I knew their VSOP and XO and recently tasted the VS, which I believed was outstanding value for money. It's still a VS, but the fruity intense wellbanced taste is exceptional for such a product. The nose is relatively thin. Personally, the aftertaste suprised me - given the younger age of this Cognac. If I would need to guess, there are some older eau-de-vie in there.
The bottle design is similar to the other bottles in the range and distinctive. There are other design that I prefer, but the content is what counts. And it appears, I'm not alone with this judgement. The VS won Gold (Best In Class) in the 2011 International Wine & Spirit Competition, but also constantly an outstanding silver award between 2008 and 2013.
I would recommend this to people who just started to discover Cognac as a drink.
Over Otard Cognac
