La Distillerie Generale Vintage 1979 Grande Champagne Cognac
Groeigebied (Cru) & bodem: Grande Champagne
Single Cask Vintage from the Grande Champagne in 1979
Crafted for connoisseurs and hedonists alike, this artisanal producer presents their La Distillerie Generale Grande Champagne 1979 Vintage Cognac. Drawing inspiration from both the past and the present, this Vintage is a breath of fresh air into the world of Cognac.
Expertly selected by the Martell Master Blender Christophe Vautaud, La Distillerie Générale is a project of the world's finest producers, and this Cognac is no exception. A single cask Vintage Cognac, it has been matured in new fine-grained oak barrels with the purpose of imbuing the eaux-de-vie with rich aromas.
The level of expertise harnessed at this distillery means that have chosen the Grande Champagne with the utmost conviction. This growing area in the Cognac region is known for its exceptional eaux-de-vie, and is also known as the ‘Premier Cru’. The unique chalky soil makes for what is widely considered to be the most balanced Cognac of them all, with a lengthy finish.
Bottled by hand, the bottle is perfectly elaborated and custom-made with an embroidered label; reminding the taster of a time gone by, yet remaining eternally present. The Cognac was discovered in the Martell cellars in 1984, and was blended in 1979 from the Grande Champagne. It has since remained in a single barrel to maintain its original characteristics some four decades ago.
La Distillerie Generale draw on one of the largest selections of eaux-de-vie in the world; each of which is selected with passion and verve. The Grande Champagne 1979 Vintage Cognac remained in barrels in a wet cellar on the Vigerie site of Martell until January 29, 2009, to then be transferred Chanteloup close to the castle in a drier cellar.
Presentation of the decanter
When it comes to artisanal quality, this bottle is unlike any you’ll come across. A stunning ‘taster bottle’ shape with a cork stopper, the label is handsewn - an embroidered delight.
The style is almost mock-oriental, taking its inspiration from pop art with shades of electric blue and scarlet. They have been designed by the same company as the Royal Navy insignias, and are the piece de resistance of this fine Vintage. A gorgeous addition to any collection.
This Cognac has not been cold-filtered. 870 bottles of 35cl were created at 50% ABV, and 360 bottles of reserve Cognac.
While the stock for the Vintage 1979 Cognac is limited to a single-barrel, it is certainly one to be tasted, shared, mixed and savored as you see fit. It is recommended, however, to enjoy this Cognac at room temperature, with an ice cube. Try it in a tumbler glass.
This Cognac pairs incredibly with wild poultry, topped with candied figs or sweet potatoes. The bitterness of chocolate and the mellowness of mushrooms also pair brilliantly with this Vintage.
Experience the art of the masters
When I showed this bottle of cognac to the Martell representative in Greater China, he was amazed that she hadn't seen anything like it from their company.
We opened the bottle of cognac together to try it on a cold evening. Opening the cap, the nose first caught a strong aroma of aged walnuts and almonds, poured out a golden-copper liquid, and then emerged aromas of chocolate and candied fruits, a very pleasant sensation.
After everyone had taken a sip of the cognac, the palate was powerful and well-structured, with crisp notes of dates, figs and cassis. A very full-bodied, good cognac.
The liquor is very persistent on the finish from the tongue, mouth and after the throat.
A master mixer, thanks to the cognac expert for a pleasant evening, thank you!
