Putting Central American rum on the map! The 2004 Plantation Panama Rum by Pierre Ferrand

Although Panama is the lesser-known country for rum production, this 2004 vintage will surely give you food for thought when it comes to Central American producers, delivering an exciting flavorsome feast of fruits and spices. Distilled in a four column still at Alcoholes Del Istmo distillery, this floral and spicy rum is truly a treat for any rum drinker. A 72 hour fermentation process creates floral notes of violet that are mellowed out with deep, dark berry flavors such as red currants and plum. Of course the country's tropical location is represented with the presence of exotic fruit and a finishing touch of vanilla on the nose.

Produced using molasses rather than traditional “cane wine”, this traditional distilling process offers a depth of flavor that is rarely seen amongst modern agricultural rums that are popular today. Because of the country’s hot and humid climate, the rum has been aged for 11 years on site in American oak Bourbon barrels, before being transferred to European soil to age for a further 2-4 years in Ferrand Cognac casks.  If left for too long on this tropical island, the Angels’ share becomes too large, so ageing a rum for this long is a particularly difficult task and is rarely left for such a long time. Transferring the rum to age in Ferrand casks not only protects the resulting volume of alcohol produced, but also adds a particularly smoky character and creates alternative flavor profiles within the rum itself.

This floral fiesta from Panama is enhanced by woody and spicy notes thanks to its aging in France in Ferrand casks, infusing it with slightly tannic tones.

How to Enjoy

Appreciate this Central American sensation neat or over ice, to enhance the exotic fruit flavors, why not add a wedge of freshly squeezed lime?

Presentation of the Bottle

A celebration of Panama with the island’s name delicately descending the bottle’s elegant, long neck. The two barrels on the bottle's label are a cheeky nod to the two-step ageing process that gives the rum is complex depth of flavors. The label highlights Panama Viejo and its breathtaking cathedral in the old city of the country’s capital. Panama’s coat of arms is referenced behind a cornucopia, a symbol of abundance.
