Description
Malternative Belgium Pineau des Charentes No. 6 “La Sépia” – 46 Years Old
Malternative Belgium Pineau des Charentes No. 6 “La Sépia” is an exceptionally long-aged Pineau des Charentes originating from Grande Champagne. Bottled on 30/09/2025, this Pineau has matured for 46 years in a Cognac cask before bottling at 17.80% alcohol by volume. Released in a very limited outturn of only 149 bottles, it represents a rare example of what extended ageing can bring to Pineau des Charentes when time, wood, and oxidation are allowed to interact slowly and naturally.
Pineau des Charentes is traditionally enjoyed in a relatively youthful form, where fruit and sweetness take centre stage. In this case, the extended maturation shifts the focus away from overt sweetness and towards texture, depth, and integration. What defines this Pineau is not intensity, but calm concentration. The profile is soft and layered, with richness that develops gradually rather than asserting itself immediately.
Ageing for more than four decades in a Cognac cask has given this Pineau a complex oxidative profile. The influence of oxygen over time has shaped the aromas and flavours, smoothing the structure and rounding the edges while preserving balance. The result is a style that feels composed and settled, where fruit, wood, and alcohol exist in equilibrium. This is not a Pineau driven by sugar, but by maturity and precision.
On the nose, dried fruits dominate, particularly apricot and fig, joined by candied citrus notes. Nutty aromas of almond and walnut add depth, while beeswax and gentle tobacco tones underline the long ageing. Soft spices remain in the background, integrated rather than pronounced. The aromatic profile is quiet but persistent, revealing new details with time in the glass.
The palate confirms the impression of softness and control. The texture is velvety, with a rounded mouthfeel that spreads evenly across the palate. Flavours of candied fruit are layered with praline and toffee, while orange peel adds a subtle bitterness that balances the sweetness. A refined rancio character provides depth without sharp edges, supported by enough acidity to maintain freshness and structure.
The finish is long and warm, marked by nutty tones, cocoa, and lingering citrus sweetness. The flavours fade slowly, leaving a clean and polished impression. This extended finish highlights the benefits of very long ageing, where nothing feels rushed or disjointed.
Malternative Belgium Pineau des Charentes No. 6 “La Sépia” is best approached as a contemplative drink rather than an aperitif. Its profile rewards slow tasting and attention, offering an experience shaped by decades rather than minutes.
Presentation of the bottle
The label features abstract, layered forms in warm sepia, ochre, and rust tones, visually referencing the passage of time. Darker accents evoke old wood and rancio notes, while gold details reflect the liquid’s amber glow in the glass. The overall design suggests depth and softness, with overlapping textures that mirror the Pineau’s long maturation and rounded profile. Key information such as age, bottling strength, cru, and bottle count is clearly displayed, reinforcing the transparent and precise presentation.
How to drink
This Pineau des Charentes should not be refrigerated. It is best enjoyed at room temperature or very slightly chilled. Serve in a small wine glass to allow the aromas to develop fully. Due to its age and texture, it is well suited to slow sipping, either on its own or at the end of a meal.
