Description

Malternative Belgium Cognac No. 48 "Le Prullepie" Lot 79

Malternative Belgium Cognac No. 48 "Le Prullepie" Lot 79 is a single cask Cognac selected from the cellars of Marie Foucher, located in Foussignac in the Fins Bois cru. This Cognac was distilled in 1979 and bottled in 2026 at natural cask strength of 54.1% ABV. Produced from vineyards planted in the 1960s, this expression reflects both the location of the estate and the long aging process that defines its character. With only 366 bottles released, it is a limited and specific selection.

The vineyards of the Foucher estate are situated between Foussignac and Triac/Roissac, close to the border of Grande Champagne. This positioning influences the aromatic profile of the Cognac, offering both structure and intensity. Marie Foucher took over the estate in 1980, continuing the work started by her father. The production remains focused on small-scale distillation and aging, allowing each batch to retain its individual profile.

This 1979 vintage shows a developed and complex aromatic profile. On the nose, it opens with a range of ripe and overripe fruit aromas, including guava, plum, apricot, and dates. These are complemented by deeper notes of dark honey and salted caramel, alongside a subtle citrus freshness. The palate is rich and smooth, with a noticeable oily texture. Flavors of stewed apple, pear, apricot, marzipan, and walnut form the core, supported by light spice and measured oak influence. The finish is long, combining dry oak with sweeter tones such as toffee and dried fruits, alongside roasted almonds and a light smoky nuance.

The name "Le Prullepie" reflects a personal and informal tone. It refers to a Dutch expression used affectionately, and the label artwork reinforces this idea. The illustration shows an elderly man playing an accordion, seated outdoors, with a small bird nearby. This figure represents a family member and adds a personal layer to the release. The presence of the robin, a recurring element during visits to the estate, further connects the Cognac to its environment and story.

This bottling is the fourth collaboration between Malternative Belgium and Marie Foucher. It follows the same approach of selecting individual casks that show a clear identity tied to both vintage and origin. Bottled without reduction, it presents the Cognac in its original strength and structure.

Presentation of the bottle

The bottle has a classic and clean shape with a broad base and gently sloping shoulders. The glass is clear, allowing the deep amber color of the Cognac to be fully visible. The label is centered and features an illustrated scene of an older man playing an accordion outdoors, dressed in warm tones, with a small bird perched nearby. Below the illustration, the text is minimal and clearly printed, highlighting the Cognac designation and lot number. The capsule is black with gold detailing, giving a simple contrast to the rest of the design. The overall presentation is restrained, with the focus placed on the artwork and the liquid itself.

How to drink

This Cognac is best enjoyed neat in a tulip-shaped glass to concentrate its aromas. Due to its high ABV, allowing it to rest in the glass for several minutes will help open up the profile. A small drop of water can be added to soften the intensity and reveal additional layers. It is suited for slow tasting, where its complexity can be fully explored over time.
