Nose: Well balanced with notes of vanilla and coffee, alongside bright hints of fresh orchard fruits developing underneath.

Palate: Powerful black cherry and gingerbread flavours give way to cinnamon and clove. Flashes of orange peel merge with a subtle tobacco note and further aromas of coffee.

Finish: A long lingering finish with enjoyable bittersweet elements of citrus highlighting an undercurrent of charred oak.

Description

Comandon Cognac No.1 Rue Saulnier

Created to mark the 200th anniversary of Comandon Cognac, its name roots back to the address of Comandon’s headquarters at no1. Rue Saulnier  the location of where it all started. Considered to be one of the first houses in the city of Cognac to start producing Cognac, its cellar not only boasts the perfect humidity but it is also steeped in history related to the Pelgrims of Saint-James the 2nd Apostle and half-brother of Jesus Christ.

Founded in 1821 by Pierre Comandon at just 20 years old, he was quick to seize this new growth opportunity and set up business on the Charente river bank in Jarnac. Later, Pierre became the mayor of Jarnac in 1851 and played an important role in the development of Cognac sales overseas.

Today Comandon is an independent bottler fronted. By the Vigneron family, who sources their Cognac to offer top-quality selections that carry the exclusivity of only being available in limited quantities and a “once it’s gone, it’s gone” reputation.

Presentation of the bottle

Displayed in a minimalistic Cognac bottle, the design of the label is what draws the eye closer to Comandon Cognac No.1 Rue Saulnier. In fitting with the bottle’s title and ode to the iconic Comandon headquarters, the label illustrates the address and its charming traditional French façade featuring stone brickwork and charming window shutters. With only 200 bottles available, a bottle dedicated to each year of its anniversary  each bottle is numbered and stands as a tribute to the legendary street where the history of Cognac was born.

How to enjoy

This special edition Cognac should be enjoyed in its purest form, neat and at room temperature. Let the Cognac breathe in a glass of your choice (although we recommend a tulip glass) for a few minutes before embarking on the tasting.

About Comandon Cognac

Comandon is an independent Cognac house that continue to control all of their production in-house. Their philosophy lies in uniting traditional elegance and two centuries of savoir-faire with modernity and pushing the boundaries, which can be seen in their bespoke branding campaigns and unique internet presence. Think La Dolce Vita meets Armani.

With an extremely forward-thinking marketing agenda and a particularly hands-on approach when it comes to the music and entertainment industry, Comandon have carved themselves an interesting space for a niche approach to the Cognac business.

They do an exceptional job of producing small, artisanal batches that offer rare and limited glimpses into one particular terroir, or one exceptional harvest, whether the eaux-de-vie are younger or older. For this reason, they defy tradition in the Cognac world, who believe that “older is better” and producing the same Cognac year in, year out is the end objective. Comandon instead work in tandem with nature, initiating unique collaborations for their single cask collection, and never fearing experimentation.

With a history dating back around 200 years, the Cognac house continue to produce excellent Cognac and receive top-notch awards.
