Eye: Rich amber with copper reflections.

Nose: A waft of old roses, charged with a touch of citrus.

Palate: Great complexity, initially revealing rich old preserved fruits, followed by dried flower petals. The finish is full of gentle tannins melting into rancio, the tell-tale sign of an old Cognac.

Description

The Last Drop Distillers 1947 Hors d'Age Cognac: a Drop of History

A truly special and unique Cognac, The Last Drop Distillers 1947 Hors d'Age Cognac is one of the first post-World War II distillations created by an unnamed producer. Finally, in the 21st century, we have been given the opportunity to own and taste it - although only 186 bottles of this little piece of history have been produced. When it's gone, it's gone.

The rare cognac was uncovered by the Last Drop team in the heart of the Charente region of southwestern France, created by a family that has been in the Cognac business since 1727. Traditionally produced in a small copper still, the resulting eaux-de-vie was left to let the passage of time work its miracle. Said to have 'the richness of summer flowers', yet still be fresh, young, and delicious, this is a rare and precious collector's item.

“The complexity of sensations stems from that history”, according to Tom Jago, The Last Drop Distillers founder. “Distilled in 1947 in a small, ancient copper still, burning wood or charcoal, it’s rich in the imperfections that mark the exceptional from the simply fine Cognac. In the mouth, you will find great complication. First, rich old preserved fruits. Then, a burst of flowers. Finally, the bite of the ancient eau-de-vie – the ‘fire’ that belongs only to Cognac.”

The Packaging

Presented in an antique-style green glass bottle, this is a Cognac that immediately stands out as being of significant age. The black wax on the neck and intricate label gives a sense of old-world luxury, emphasized by the deep red leather presentation case lined with suede. The full-size bottle is also accompanied by a 50ml miniature of the same Cognac. A Certificate of Authenticity is included, as well as a tasting booklet bound in leather, and a custom-made stopper.

How to Enjoy

The perfect digestif, this is a wonderful vintage Cognac to enjoy in good company, on special occasions, and when you have plenty of time to savor the moment. Pour into tulip glasses and wait a few moments to allow the aromas to fully open up.
