Description

Marancheville Lot N°70 Cognac

Looking back at the 1970s, one thing stands out: it was an era that broke boundaries and celebrated fresh perspectives. In that same pioneering spirit, Marancheville’s new 70s Cuvée delivers an approximately 50-year-old Cognac that blends nostalgic flair with modern craftsmanship. Adding an extra personal twist, the house’s two cellar masters—Grégoire and Laurent—hail from this very decade, making this release feel like a thoughtful nod to their own roots. Fitting snugly between Marancheville’s 30-year-old XO and similarly-aged stellar L'Exemplaire offerings and the uber-mature Lot N°14/45, the 70s Cuvée fills a perfect gap for Cognac aficionados craving an age they haven’t sipped before from this producer - a fashionably late addition to the range let's say. And we must add, it's looks are just as stunning as the juice inside, with an overall aesthetic aiming to bring back some of the codes from the 70s.

Once poured, you’ll be greeted by aromas of precious woods, leather, honeysuckle, and candied orange, all mingling together like they’ve been planning this reunion for years. The palate offers an engaging balance of subtle power (Grande Champagne does this so well) and graceful elegance, leading into a finish that plays on and on.

Some product details:

  • Number of eaux-de-vie in blend: At least 10
  • Cellar conditions: Eaux-de-vie from several different cellars - Laurent's (humid cellar), Gregoire's (rather dry cellar) and one on the banks of the Charente (humid cellar)
  • Barrel size: 250 to 400 liters
  • Grain: Unknown, these are old barrels for which they have no history
  • Toast: Unknown, these are old barrels whose history they do not have
  • Tonellerie(s): Unknown, these are old casks whose history they do not have
  • Distillation with or without lees: Tasting and aromatic power tell that it's a distillation with lees, but here again they have no perfect record back to the 70s!

In short, we're quite convinced that everything Marancheville bottles is pure gold, and this 70s Cuvee is no exception.

The Marancheville Lot N°70 Cognac is a rare and carefully curated blend of eaux-de-vie exclusively from the Grande Champagne, 1er Cru de Cognac. Inspired by the energy and cultural evolution of the 1970s, this Cognac is a tribute to both an era and the expertise of the house’s cellar masters, Grégoire and Laurent, who themselves were born in that decade.

Crafted from at least ten different eaux-de-vie, this Cognac has matured in various cellars—ranging from humid conditions near the Charente River to drier environments—resulting in an exceptional balance between structure and aromatic intensity. The barrels used for aging vary in size from 250 to 400 liters, and while their precise history remains unknown, the tasting profile suggests a distillation with lees, contributing to its depth and complexity.

With a distinctive 41.5% ABV, the Lot N°70 offers a refined expression that sits between Marancheville’s XO and their prestigious Lot 14/45. The aromatic richness reveals deep notes of candied citrus, floral hints of honeysuckle, and warm cedarwood, complemented by a lingering, silky finish marked by exotic fruit nuances.

Presentation of the bottle

The Marancheville Lot N°70 Cognac is presented in a bold, modern decanter that reflects both its vintage inspiration and refined craftsmanship. The square-shaped bottle with rounded edges showcases the rich amber hue of the Cognac inside, emphasizing its depth and complexity. A thick glass base adds weight and stability, enhancing its premium feel.

The front label design is striking, featuring a minimalist yet elegant gold and black color scheme. The number "70" is prominently displayed in a stylish, artistic font, symbolizing the decade that inspired this exceptional Cognac. Above it, the Marancheville emblem adds a touch of classic branding, reinforcing its identity as a Grande Champagne Cognac.

The bottle is sealed with a natural cork stopper, topped with a wooden cap that carries the Marancheville branding. A ribbon label attached to the neck further elevates its artisanal appeal.

Adding to its prestige, the Cognac is housed in a wooden display box, engraved with the Marancheville logo and the product name. The box provides both protection and a luxurious presentation, making it a perfect collector’s item or gift for Cognac enthusiasts.

How to drink

To fully appreciate the nuances of the Marancheville Lot N°70, enjoy it neat in a tulip glass, allowing the aromas to unfold gradually. For an enhanced experience, let it rest for a few minutes before sipping. This Cognac is best savored slowly, revealing layers of complexity over time.
