Description
Le Clos de la Groie Vieille Réserve Cognac (70cl)
Le Clos de la Groie Vieille Réserve Cognac is produced by Vignoble Dénechère in the Fins Bois cru of the Cognac appellation in France. It was distilled from Ugni Blanc grapes and aged for over seven decades in French oak casks. This expression is an estate-bottled blend incorporating eaux-de-vie as old as 1947, personally selected by Franck Dénechère and bottled at 40% alcohol by volume.
The Vieille Réserve Sélection du Papy Franck is the crowning achievement of the Dénechère family's five-generation legacy at their estate in Brie-sous-Matha, a quiet village in the Charente-Maritime, approximately 15 kilometres from the town of Cognac. The family has cultivated vines and practised the art of distillation here for generations, gradually building a cellar of exceptional aged eaux-de-vie that few independent Fins Bois producers can rival.
The Vieille Réserve draws upon the estate's most precious barrels, including some containing eaux-de-vie distilled as far back as 1947, making this one of the oldest and most historically significant spirits in the Clos de la Groie range. These eaux-de-vie were patiently aged in small French oak casks, absorbing layer upon layer of complexity over the decades. The result is a cognac of extraordinary depth, one that speaks equally to the quality of the Fins Bois terroir and to the Dénechère family's fierce commitment to preserving the very best of what their land has to offer.
The Fins Bois cru is often underestimated compared to the more celebrated Grande and Petite Champagne crus, yet in the hands of a dedicated estate producer like the Dénechère family, it produces spirits of genuine grandeur. The limestone and clay soils yield Ugni Blanc grapes with a natural acidity ideally suited to distillation, and the eaux-de-vie that emerge from the estate's copper pot stills are round, fruity, and richly aromatic, with a character that only deepens with extended barrel ageing.
On the nose, the Vieille Réserve reveals captivating complexity earned through decades in oak. Dried fruits such as prune, fig, and raisin mingle with aromas of dark chocolate, candied orange peel, aged wood, and a delicate whisper of dried rose petals. Over time, a subtle rancio develops: the sought-after walnut and earthy character that only emerges after many years of barrel ageing, considered the hallmark of a truly great aged Fins Bois. On the palate, the spirit is full-bodied and generous. Roasted walnut, leather, warm spices, and ripe stone fruit give way to a long, enveloping finish that lingers on notes of beeswax, vanilla, and toasted oak. The extraordinary length of the finish bears testament to the depth of the eaux-de-vie at its heart.
The Vieille Réserve is presented in a 70cl bottle adorned with a handwritten label, a deliberate nod to the artisanal family nature of the production, and arrives in an elegant gift box, making it an ideal centrepiece for any serious cognac collection or a truly memorable gift for a connoisseur.
Presentation of the bottle
The Vieille Réserve Sélection du Papy Franck comes in a classic 70cl bottle bearing a hand-finished label, signed in the tradition of the estate. The presentation reflects the artisanal spirit of the Dénechère family: understated yet distinguished, prioritising authenticity over commercial polish. The bottle arrives in a bespoke gift box, making it a refined choice for gifting to a cognac lover or for any special occasion. The overall presentation is in keeping with the rarity and prestige of the cognac within.
How to drink
The Vieille Réserve is best enjoyed neat, at room temperature, in a tulip-shaped glass that allows the aromas to concentrate and develop. Pour a measure and allow the cognac to rest in the glass for at least five minutes before tasting; the full aromatic complexity, including the delicate rancio notes, will gradually reveal itself. A single drop of still mineral water may be added to open up additional layers of fragrance without disturbing the balance. This is a cognac designed for slow, contemplative enjoyment: ideal after a fine meal, paired with dark chocolate or a sliver of aged cheese.

Clos de la Groie Vieille Reserve Selection du Papy Franck
Sage and tranquil nose. Beautiful with heavy rancio and fruit that feels almost like spreadable fruits pastes: quince paste with a hint of vanilla. Apricot jam and something exotic almost like mango and papaya but weaving all throughout are these notes of rancio, old oak, spices, pepper, and nuts....
