Presale. Bottling will take place during the second week of June.

Nose: Really really outstanding nose! It’s a nose that calls one into the glass, not shouting out to the drinker. Seemingly very mature and complex. Needs hours and multiple sittings to pick apart. Beautiful old antique wood, rancio, Amaro with its orange-y bitter herbal woody type notes, dried fruits like apricots for example or sweet candied clementine. Make no mistake, this is not an overtly fruity Cognac. There is fruit but the noble elegant antique wood is leading the way followed by all those other notes. Really complex and one that will likely evolve with lots of air and time in the glass.

Palate: Delicate dried fruits come through, reminiscent of dried apricots and sweet candied clementine. Make no mistake, however—this is not an overtly fruity Cognac. While the fruit is certainly there, it is the noble, elegant antique wood leading the way, beautifully followed by all the other nuances. It delivers remarkably intense, concentrated flavors, yet it manages to remain incredibly easy to drink and approachably smooth.

Finish: Nice dryness and tension on the exit, leaving a lovely, subtle bittersweet kick and a distinct, gripping tannic structure. Exceptionally long—this is a finish you count in minutes, not seconds.

A. de Vacqueur Très Vieux Fins Bois Cognac

Maison A. de Vacqueur presents a Fins Bois of remarkable depth, maturity, and stunning complexity. It comes from a typical "light groie" terroir, the chalky, stony soil found deep in the Fins Bois cru near Matha. This is a hors d'age cognac in the fullest sense.

The lot was aged entirely in barrel and never moved to glass, then left in cask for decades by a small winegrower family estate before being rediscovered. Its alcohol reduction is entirely natural, with not a single drop of water added. The colour is natural and no additives have been used. This is a bottle that is as interesting as it is rare. One for serious collectors and lovers of pure un-messed with old Cognac.

To place Fins Bois among the wider region, see our guide to the six cognac crus.

A note on the name

This bottling was previously offered under a lot designation referencing its presumed age. Following current cognac labelling regulations, we have renamed it Très Vieux. The cognac is, without question, exceptionally old, the distillation is believed to date back many decades, quite possibly to the first half of the 20th century, but this cannot be officially confirmed. We share this as our best estimation based on the barrel and provenance, not as a certified fact, and the name had to be adjusted accordingly.

Presentation of the bottle

The cognac is presented in a tall, clear bottle sealed with a natural cork. The kraft-toned label carries the A. de Vacqueur bird emblem, the mention Très Vieux, Fins Bois, and the format 70cl at 43.6% vol. The very deep amber colour is visible through the glass.

How to drink

Serve neat in a tulip glass or snifter at room temperature, giving it time in the glass to release its rancio. A cognac to sip slowly and on its own.
