The Cognac Grande Champagne JC Saunier Lot 75 is a single-cask expression from the premier cru of the Cognac region — Grande Champagne — crafted from 100% Ugni Blanc grapes and bottled at cask strength of 44 % in a 70 cl format. This release highlights both provenance and purity: a single cask, one grape variety, and a focus on intensity and character rather than mass production.
The Sabourat estate, transmitted from generation to generation since 1775, is now directed by Jean-Claude Saunier. Located on the limestone slopes of Segonzac, in the heart of the Grande Champagne, it covers 29 hectares of vineyards. The farm carries out all the production stages: vine cultivation, vinification, distillation, as well as ageing alternating between wet and dry cellars. This very old Cognac has all the characteristics of the best spirits of its own.
In the glass, its bright amber-copper hue signals a mature spirit with vigour. On the nose, the aromatics are both fresh and concentrated: initial notes of grape, ripe peach and mango give way to quince, apple and orange jellies, before warming into hints of varnished wood and subtle spice. The Ugni Blanc grape delivers its hallmark freshness, while the long ageing in oak and the single-cask format deliver a deeper complexity.
On the palate, the experience is powerful yet refined. A barrage of exotic fruits – mango and passion fruit dominate – but the freshness remains clear: a menthol lift gives energy to the sweetness. The wood influence is present via cigar-box and lightly roasted oak, but the spirit avoids bitterness, maintaining an elegant balance. On the finish, the tangy intensity persists: long, rich, and with a striking rancio note – that textured, slightly nutty, deeply matured character that connoisseurs value.
This edition is best enjoyed neat, in a tulip glass at cellar or just slightly cooler than ambient temperature. No dilution keeps the complexity intact.
