Tasting review

Eye: Chestnut brown

Nose: A multifarious, yet well balanced aroma. Spicy and oaky tones lead with scents of charred oak, wood spices, black tea, raisins and dried cranberries; a complex mix of dark fruits, rich oak and spice. Sweet notes then arise such as caramel, fig, berry jams, stewed plums and eventually the expected aroma of chestnuts, alongside leather and toasted bread perfectly balance this bouquet. Despite the 47.1% vol. there is no trace of alcoholic sharpness arising from glass.

Palate: A unique and fulfilling palate. Lots of rich roasted wood and chestnut notes are present. The well integrated alcohol carries flavors of pear compote, honey bread, dried fruits, cinnamon, nutmeg and caramel, with a subtle overlay of vanilla and chocolate. The creaminess, similar to cocoa butter, gives this spirit a wonderfully indulgent quality. The finish is deep and complex, with buttery wood notes, pears and spices. A sensational flavor.

Description

Ferrand Renegade No 2

Produced by the renowned Ferrand Cognac and the second release from Ferrand’s Renegade Barrel, this spirit’s unique aging process means it technically cannot be classified as a cognac. The liquid gold is initially aged for five to seven years in 350 litre traditional oak barrels and it is then transferred to 225 litre barrels made from chestnut wood for its final year. This practice was apparently popular before 1945, but has since been forgotten and therefore is an eau de vie de vin. The chestnut cask that the brandy is finished in is what gives it the notes of candied fruits, floral and honey.

Ferrand Renegade No 2 is made entirely using Ugni Blanc grapes from the Grande Champagne era and 18 casks went into its release to produce 700 bottles. Maison Ferrand prides itself on exploring ancient methods of distilling and this delicious nectar speaks to the importance of preserving such methods. A limited edition release in 2017, the spirit then went on to win a silver medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2018.

Presentation of the bottle:

A vintage label design that acknowledges the history of this distillery process and uses the classic Ferrand brand colours of gold and red to compliment the rich colour of the brandy itself. Presented in a crisp and sophisticated black and gold box, the whole package oozes indulgence.

How to enjoy:

This eau de vie de vin was created for the purpose of neat enjoyment and is perfectly suitable for this. However, high quality sipping spirits are often over-looked for use in cocktails and should not always be so. Paired with other high quality ingredients, the Ferrand Renegade No 2 offers the opportunity to create a complex and exquisite cocktail.
