A Collector's Item Fit For a King: A Courvoisier VSOP 1960 Cognac

This very bottle was procured following the liquidation of an estate, and has been stored in a basement.

One of the best things about collector's Cognac is that one can often trace the unique history of each Cognac house through the oldest of bottles. With its long neck and short bottom, this very old Courvoisier VSOP decanter from 1960 is the sure ancestor of the current VSOP from this historic house.

This very Courvoisier VSOP is over 60 years old, and will be a unique blend of eaux-de-vie selected from the Fine Champagne growth area, aged between 8 and 12 years all those years ago.

Courvoisier can be considered a very regal Cognac indeed. And this collector's item is certainly fit for a king - in fact, it even features a seal that states "By Appointment of King George VI." King George, or "Bertie" as he was known, reigned as the King of England from 1936 until 1952.

As a result, he was recognized as a symbol of British determination during the Second World War. This Cognac is, therefore, a precious time capsule from a significant historical moment.

This exclusive Cognac is made up of eaux-de-vie from two regions in the Cognac appellation, each as famous and exclusive as each other. Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, with their chalky soil and rolling hills, are both considered amongst the premier regions for Cognac.

Courvoisier Cognac has also developed the nickname of “Le Cognac de Napoleon” as Napoleon Bonaparte held it in such high esteem. Legend has it that he even took with him hundreds of bottles during his exile.

Considered to be "The Brandy of Napoléon", this unique collector's item is very much a wartime collector's piece, celebrated by two war heroes - Napoléon Bonaparte and King George VI.

Presentation of the decanter

The decanter comes in a 70cl with an elegant, long neck and appealing moss green seal. It contains a royal badge of approval from the King of England.

À propos de Courvoisier Cognac

Courvoisier is amongst the four leading Cognac houses in the world - also known as the 'Big Four'. Legend has it that the emperor Napoléon himself chose Courvoisier as his preferred Cognac, therefore Courvoisier brandy is often referred to as “The Cognac of Napoleon”. The company dates back to 1828 and since has its headquarters in the town of Jarnac. With prestigious bottles such as Courvoisier Napoléon or Josephine, the Cognac house is at the top of the luxury spirits market. The Courvoisier VS, VSOP, and Rose Liqueur are also very popular. The drink is strongly ingrained in US Hip Hop culture with Busta Rhymes and P Diddy dedicating the song “Pass the Courvoisier” to the traditional brand.
