It was the widow of a former broker, now deceased, who sold Jean these very old Grande Champagne. Her husband, who was still in business some thirty years ago, had a reputation for tenacity. In this way, he had acquired stocks of cognacs that he bought in his village and the surrounding area and then sold on to merchants. His passion was for old Cognacs, which he accumulated, barrel after barrel, like treasures. He didn't even allow his wife, a schoolteacher, or his children, young and grown, to enter this sanctuary, to which he jealously guarded the key.
It was only in the final stage of his life, destroyed by illness, when his son had to take charge, that those closest to him discovered what he had accumulated over so many years. In a wine storehouse that had once been a barn which he had had thick metal doors fitted, were around fifteen barrels and a few casks. In these barrels, each covered with a black plastic tarpaulin to limit the costly "angels' share" were batches of very old Cognacs from Grande Champagne Cognacs. Each barrel was inscribed with the product's the origin of the product, the quantity purchased, the degree, the volume and the year of harvest. But no archives!
It was at this point that his wife was able to profit from the brandy trade.
La maison de Cognac indépendante Grosperrin est une maison relativement nouvelle dans la région, n'ayant été créée qu'en 1999 par son fondateur, Jean Grosperrin. Grosperrin est basé à Saintes qui se situe entre les terroirs de Fins Bois et Borderies et il est aujourd'hui dirigé par le fils de Jean, Guilhelm, qui a pris la relève en 2004 à seulement 23 ans.
La mission de Guilhelm est de découvrir les producteurs de toute la région afin de créer des Cognacs vraiment uniques à partir des six crus. Cette vision a été rendue possible par les relations fantastiques que Jean Grosperrin a tissées avec les producteurs, et que Guilhelm a depuis construites et élargies. Aujourd'hui, Grosperrin travaille avec plus de 150 producteurs de Cognac, parmi lesquels Guilhelm sélectionnera méticuleusement des fûts pour les transformer en exquises bouteilles.
