Martell L’Or de Jean Martell Zodiac Horse Edition Cognac is a limited and carefully composed expression created to mark the Year of the Horse. Produced by Maison Martell, this edition explores a dialogue between cultural symbolism and Cognac blending, while remaining faithful to the established identity of L’Or de Jean Martell. The Horse Edition was conceived as part of a series celebrating the Chinese zodiac, with each release reflecting the character and symbolism of a specific animal.
For this edition, Martell Cellar Master Christophe Valtaud enriched the original blend of L’Or de Jean Martell without altering its fundamental profile. The approach focused on highlighting attributes traditionally associated with the horse, such as vitality, controlled energy and elegance. To achieve this, very old eaux-de-vie from different Years of the Horse were selected and integrated into the assemblage. This process required precise balance, ensuring that the freshness and liveliness introduced by these eaux-de-vie complemented the depth and maturity of the original blend.
The aromatic profile reflects this intention clearly. On the nose, the Cognac presents a generous and smooth expression, combining honeyed tones with candied fruit and delicate floral accents. A subtle aged character provides structure without dominating the aromatic range. On the palate, the Cognac expands with notable volume, revealing red fruit and blackcurrant notes. These flavours are supported by gentle sweetness and layered complexity, giving the Cognac both energy and length. The finish is extended and detailed, allowing the profile to evolve slowly and consistently.
This Zodiac Horse Edition also reflects a meeting of artistic disciplines. Martell collaborated with artist He Datian, whose work is strongly associated with representations of horses. His artistic approach combines traditional Chinese brush techniques with expressive calligraphy, resulting in visuals that convey movement and strength. The artwork created for this edition was designed specifically to mirror the character of the Cognac, reinforcing the connection between the liquid and its symbolic inspiration.
Limited to 500 individually numbered decanters, this edition is intended as a rare and composed expression of L’Or de Jean Martell. The blend, presentation and concept were developed together to create a unified release, with particular attention paid to balance, continuity and precision. This Cognac is primarily suited to slow, focused tasting moments, where its structure and evolution can be fully appreciated.
The Cognac is presented in a mouth-blown crystal decanter created in collaboration with Baccarat. The decanter is designed to resemble a single, pure drop of Cognac, with smooth and rounded lines that emphasize clarity and volume. It is partially covered in 19-carat gold, enhancing the contrast between the crystal and the liquid inside. The stopper is crafted from red crystal and sculpted in the form of a horse’s head, reinforcing the theme of the Zodiac Horse Edition.
The decanter is housed within a red cabinet designed to complement its presence. The cabinet features an intricate horseshoe motif, repeated both on the exterior and on the gold-toned pedestal that supports the decanter inside. The background is finished in gold and engraved with grapevine details alongside an illustration of a rearing horse. The overall presentation is structured and bold, framing the decanter while maintaining visual coherence.
Martell L’Or de Jean Martell Zodiac Horse Edition Cognac is best enjoyed neat, served at room temperature in a tulip-shaped glass. Allowing the Cognac to rest for several minutes after pouring helps the aromas unfold gradually. This expression is intended for slow tasting and is most suitable for moments of calm focus. Adding ice or mixers is not recommended, as it would reduce the clarity and depth developed through long ageing and careful blending.
The 310 years of history and expertise of Martell form the precious heritage of the oldest of the great Cognac houses. Founded in 1715, Maison Martell has, since that time, made the Borderies cru its signature. The smallest and rarest of the crus brings floral aromas to its eaux-de-vie. Distilling only clear wines and ageing in fine-grained oak barrels honors the terroir and gives Martell Cognacs their elegance. Known for its famous Cordon Bleu created in 1912, Maison Martell continues to innovate with high-end creations such as XXO Chanteloup and L’Or de Jean Martell. Today, Maison Martell is committed to sustainable development—from vineyard soil to delivery logistics, including distillation.
