Description
Leopold Gourmel Age des Epices Extra 20 Carats Grande Champagne Cognac
Leopold Gourmel, established in 1972 by Pierre Voisin and Olivier Blanc, set out with a distinct philosophy centered on respecting nature and questioning established Cognac traditions. The producer focuses on natural processes and prioritizing quality over quantity. This approach guides their commitment to creating pure vintage Cognacs, distinguishing them from houses that blend different years. The "Age des Epices Extra 20 Carats" expression is a "Tres Vieux" or very old Cognac, reflecting this pursuit of quality and age.
This Cognac originates from the Grande Champagne cru, recognized for producing eaux-de-vie of notable finesse and complexity. The region's chalky soil, known as "crayeux," allows for both excellent drainage and water retention, contributing to the slow ripening of Ugni Blanc grapes- the primary varietal cultivated for its high acidity and aging potential. Leopold Gourmel employs a "fat distillation" method, including the lees, to enhance aromatic concentration. The eaux-de-vie is then aged for at least 25 years in slightly toasted, fine-grain French oak casks, with approximately 30% new oak, to impart structure while preserving the Cognac's inherent aromas. The Cognac is also never chill-filtered.
This Leopold Gourmel Age des Epices Extra 20 Carats Grande Champagne Cognac is presented in a 750ml bottle, with an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 40%.
How to drink
This Extra Cognac is ideal for Cognac connoisseurs and enthusiasts. To best appreciate its qualities, it can be enjoyed after a multi-course meal, served with rich, full-bodied wines. It is recommended to sip it neat or on the rocks, allowing it to rest in a tulip glass for a few minutes before tasting to let the aromas fully develop. The distiller also suggests pairing it with pure black chocolate, or enjoying it as a warming drink in winter.
About Leopold Gourmel Cognac
This cognac house has always relied on natural processes. From growing the grapes to picking, maturing, distilling, aging and bottling them, Gourmel cognac is free of any chemicals, pesticides or additives to enhance color in respect of nature and the final product. The philosophy of the company is to concentrate on quality not quantity, which means that one year the outcome may be higher than in others. This is further shown by the radical decision to produce only pure vintage cognacs, so there is no blending of different years in order to create VS, VSOP or XO cognacs for instance. To go with this authentic approach, the design of Gourmel is simple and modern.
